Job Summary:
This is a Civil Service position, responsible for training others in the care of a variety of laboratory animals in accordance with applicable safety, sanitation, and research requirements. This position conducts training of personnel in proper animal husbandry, facilities, and equipment needed to carry out these requirements.

Position Responsibilities:
Employee Training (65%) -
This position conducts the training of new employees, including orienting new RAR employees and UMN research staff to specific animal housing facilities and RAR policies and procedures. Teach new employees animal husbandry procedures, maintain their training records, and provide feedback to area supervisors. This person will also review SOPs and provide recommendations for new SOPs and updates to current SOPs
Training Program Support (20%) -
Develops and maintains training modules, employee sign off records, and other necessary documentation required for training employees and lab members.
Animal Care Support (15%) -
Supports area supervisors by assisting with animal care and husbandry tasks.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:
Some work assignments will involve exposure to animal allergens, high levels of noise, and/or disinfectants and sanitizing agents. To protect employees, the University of Minnesota may ask that you wear personal protection equipment, some of which may require medical monitoring and fitness testing. All required protective equipment, testing, and medical evaluations will be provided by the University.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
* BA/BS, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 4 years
* Experience working with laboratory animals

Preferred Qualifications:
* AALAS Certification (ALAT)

Selection Criteria:
* Demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions in English
* Demonstrated writing skills
* Good computer skills
* Good conflict management skills
* Good organizational and planning skills

About the Department

Research Animal Resources (RAR) provides the University of Minnesota research community with animal care, procurement services, veterinary knowledge, and maintenance of housing facilities for animal-related research activities. The position of Research Veterinary Technician is union represented, and is part of a staff of over 120 employees including Professional and Administrative staff, Civil Service staff, Union Represented members, and student employees. RAR has a daily census of 24,000 rodent cages in 20 buildings split into 7 geographic teams around the Minneapolis and St. Paul Campuses.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.18/hour - $32.25/hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment

Position Type: Civil-Service & Non-Faculty Labor Represented Staff
