Job Summary

Based on qualifications, the selected candidate may be hired at either an MRI Scientist 3 OR MRI Scientist 4.

The UC Davis Imaging Research Center is seeking a full-time MRI Scientist. The IRC is a campus-designated core facility that supports MRI research and promotes the use of modern MRI-based methods in basic science, and clinical & translational investigations of the brain and body.

The MRI Scientist will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of Scientists, Clinicians, and Engineers to provide advanced technical support for investigators at the IRC and develop and apply novel MRI techniques for human and non-human primate imaging. The IRC manages 2 MRI scanners, one in Sacramento and one in Davis. This position will involve work at both scanners.

The MRI Scientist's responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide expert advice and technical assistance to MRI users within the Imaging Research Center to optimize MRI scan protocols for specific research needs
  • Support acquisition and analysis of MRI data
  • Develop and implement comprehensive quality assurance (QA) protocols to monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain image quality of the MRI systems
  • Train and supervise students and junior researchers in MRI techniques and safety procedures
  • Develop and implement novel MRI techniques and protocols to advance Imaging Research Center research
  • Write and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications for MRI Scientist 4

  • A PhD in Physics, Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated multiple years of experience in MRI acquisition and research, in a human imaging setting
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python)

Preferred Qualifications for MRI Scientist 4

  • Demonstrated experience with MRI systems and coil quality control procedures
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced MRI techniques, such as functional MRI (fMRI), Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), Arterial pin labeling (ASL), or Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)
  • Demonstrated experience with the operations of 3T systems
  • Demonstrated experience with IDEA or another MRI pulse sequence programming interface

Minimum Qualifications for MRI Scientist 3

  • A Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience in MRI acquisition and research, in a human imaging setting
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python)

Preferred Qualifications for MRI Scientist 3

  • A PhD in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience with MRI system and coil quality control procedures
  • Demonstrated experience with or ability to learn advanced MRI techniques such as functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), arterial spin labeling (ASL), or magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)
