Vice President of Safety & Internal Controls

Provides leadership and management for the Association's risk, safety, transportation and insurance initiatives to promote a culture of safety in the YMCA. Develops partnerships with center leadership to develop and implement best practices in areas of safety and risk. Identifies best practices and leads improvement initiatives to reduce workplace risks, raise awareness and improve safe work practices.

Essential Functions:


  1. Leads the Safety and Internal Controls team. Provides guidance, feedback and professional development to support staff growth and retention.
  2. Conducts risk assessments and develops responsive procedures to mitigate risk throughout the organization.
  3. Communicates and follows up with operations and facilities staff on incidents, identifying areas of opportunity such as additional training, modifications to process, and/or required facility improvements.
  4. Develops, implements and manages system to ensure timely reporting of all incidents.
  5. Identifies property loss and liability exposures and works with insurance representatives to determine appropriate levels of insurance coverage.
  6. Supervises the audit of insurance premiums and costs and distribution of cost within the Association.
  7. Monitors case closing action, coordinates negotiations for settlement of claims wherein court action is not involved with claims adjuster and prepares reports for determined action.
  8. Manages communication with insurance carriers on all insurance issues.
  9. Provides each center and business unit with loss statements for worker's compensation, general liability and auto losses.
  10. Manages the process and activities of the Association safety programs, training, property insurance, claims management, vandalism and crisis response.
  11. Identifies, evaluates, controls and minimizes the Association's exposure to injury of workers and workplace safety issues.
  12. Assures Association is in compliance with laws relating to safety, industrial health, environmental protection, hazard control and loss prevention programs including compliance with all OSHA requirements.
  13. Assists with center in-service drills/trainings, facility inspections and aquatic safety drills.
  14. Works with operational leaders to develop and implement best practices to mitigate risk and promote safety in centers and programs.
  15. Provides oversight and leadership in contract management as it relates to risk, liability and indemnification,
  16. Works closely with volunteers on the Risk & Safety Committee of the Board of Directors.

  1. Bachelor's degree in business, risk management/safety or other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Seven to ten years of progressive professional experience in risk management, liability insurance and/or safety preferably in a YMCA or similar organization.
  3. Experience in management and development of staff.
  4. Proven ability to maintain tight control of confidential material and information.
  5. Excellent communication skills both written and oral, with all levels of staff and volunteers.
  6. Strong critical thinking skills, including the use of collaborative and creative approaches to problem solving.
  7. CRM, ARM or other risk management certification preferred.
  8. CPR and First Aid certifications may be required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, contracts, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises full time exempt and non-exempt employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing and approving timesheets; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; monitoring and updating all required staff certifications; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

COMPUTER LITERACY

Skills are essential in all of the Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to use these programs to lighten work load, develop reports and to automate procedures is very necessary. Ability to diagnose basic PC problems and to communicate those problems is very important.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

HOURS

Flexible with scheduling and availability to work operational hours of the YMCA and sites, which may include day, evenings and weekends.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local between assigned centers during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
