Job Description |
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for an Academic Success Coach. The Academic Success Coach position is a restricted, grant funded, professional faculty position that supports the
TRIO Student Support Services (
SSS) program. This program is funded by a federal Department of Education grant. The Academic Success Coach position provides career and academic advising for first generation, low income, and/or disabled students participating in the
TRIO
SSS program. In addition, the Academic Success Coach provides academic development support to improve student success.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Plans and develops workshops, provides transfer, career and academic advising, monitors progress of students' non-cognitive and cognitive skills, advocates and promotes students' self-advocacy skills, collaborates with other student services departments and faculty to best meet student needs and ensure academic success, and maintains accurate records and reports.
The Academic Success Coach position directly supports the College's diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts by effectively serving students from diverse, underrepresented, and/or under-served backgrounds.
This is a restricted professional faculty position dependent upon the conditions of the federal
TRIO grant under the Department of Education. Funding for this position has been secured through August 31, 2025. A new 5-year
TRIO grant application was submitted in July 2024 to request additional funding for the 2025-2030 grant cycle. |

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. |
KSA's/Required Qualifications |
Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or related field required; experience working with disadvantaged students, including low-income, first generation, or students with disabilities in a college setting; working knowledge of
ADA,
HIPAA, and
FERPA; experience in Word, Excel, and student information systems; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; organizational and leadership abilities, experience working collaboratively with college personnel to promote student success. Experience developing and coordinating service-oriented programs, educational workshops/seminars. Minimum three years' experience or equivalent in Student Affairs, Academic Advising, or Counseling in Higher Education. Driver's license is required. |
Additional Considerations |
Experience developing academic and cultural programs for disadvantaged students. Experience with case management, social media management, and working under grant guidelines and regulations. |
