Research Laboratory Manager

The research manager will be responsible for managing the laboratory and overseeing multiple projects. They will independently plan, conduct, and analyze studies that evaluate a range of host immune responses to melanoma, and direct antitumor effects of those responses. This NCI-sponsored Intergroup trial is directed by Dr. John Kirkwood. The research specialist will be the key person responsible for overseeing laboratory studies being conducted in the UPCI trials as well as the phase I/II UPCI 20-155, Primary banking study UPCI 16-055, multicenter E6201. The Melanoma Center also has a very sizable tissue/blood banking repository, UPCI 96-099, which provides samples to basic researchers and corporations throughout the US. The incumbent will also be responsible for coordination of the samples from the bank for various projects. This candidate will be a central post for studies of precursor lesions of melanoma, both in ECOG and intramurally at the UPCI Melanoma Center.

The research manager will be responsible for research projects that evaluate the biology, immunology, and features of clinical response and disease progression in human melanoma. In addition to the planning, coordination and assay components of the laboratory, individual will be responsible for supervising the efforts of 3-5 researchers, aiding in the QC and troubleshooting elements and preparation of the studies budgets. The managerial duties include, but are not limited to the interviewing and selection, orientation, training and review of several technologists, the preparation of budgets, purchasing, and laboratory billing.

The candidate will also have knowledge of the staging and biology of melanoma, as well as blood and tissue processing. Prior IRB, MTA, and DUA experience is required. Must be willing to mentor several med students', residents', and fellows' projects per year and guide them through their projects' completion.

Prior knowledge of the Redcap database and data entry and retrieval as well as project management experience is beneficial.


Job Summary

Acts as operational laboratory manager to oversee general day-to-day operations and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and protocols. Evaluates new products, negotiates vendor prices, and instructs staff and researchers in quality control and proper procedures.


Essential Functions

Design and conduct complex laboratories research, maintain impeccable records, and analyze data; coordinate laboratory-related issues for multi-institutional clinical trials, prepare and monitor budget-related issues. Coordinate protocol and patient related issues with the Melanoma clinic.


Physical Effort

Willing to work with hazardous chemical, radioactive materials and human body tissues and fluids. Must be able to stand and walk approximately 20% of time
