Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving cell biology and the anatomical sciences of Gross Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic and diverse learning community.
Job Duties
This position will provide comprehensive educational and technical support for a research team working under the direction of a principal investigator in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. A primary responsibility of this position will be to introduce and train all incoming students and staff to protocols in molecular cell biology and biochemistry that are employed in the pursuit of our research objectives. Additional responsibilities include the development and validation of emerging new technologies in biomedical research, supervision of the laboratory cell culture facility and management of the project budget/acquisitions, and documentation of experimental and administrative protocols.

  • The technician performs molecular laboratory assays to address scientific questions posed by the laboratory including protein, DNA, and RNA isolations, gel electrophoresis, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry, light and fluorescence microscopy, cell culture techniques and cell functional assays, PCR and quantitative RT-PCR, ELISAs, immunoprecipitation and western blotting, sample preparation for omics screening (next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry). (40%)
  • The technician is responsible for genotyping transgenic mice, and maintaining detailed inventory records for breeding purposes and experimental group assignments. The technician is also responsible for inducing relevant disease models, which includes handling and injecting mice, assessing clinical parameters quantifying differences with statistical software, and collecting tissues and cells for downstream analyses. (30%)
  • The technician will maintain an up-to-date notebook of experiments and protocols, which will be written in a user-friendly style sufficient for the training of other students, staff, and trainees. In addition, experimental results will be properly documented and figures prepared for publication. (10%)
  • The technician is responsible for laboratory supervision. This involves procurement of supplies for experiments as needed by lab personnel, maintaining inventory of needed supplies, cost accounting by tracking lab expenditures, maintaining current MSDS files for hazardous chemicals, and tracking equipment maintenance. (10%)
  • An essential responsibility of this position is to instruct all laboratory personnel in the methods employed for conducting established experimental protocols. As the need arises, the employee is expected to innovate and adopt additional new methodologies. (10%)
