JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Computational Mechanics Division at the Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory (Penn State ARL) is seeking an Assistant Research Professor to join our team of research faculty. Penn State ARL performs research and development of innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the U.S. Navy, Department of Defense (DoD), and Intel Community (IC). A successful candidate for this position will be involved in all aspects of elasto-hydrodynamic bearing design, development, modeling, and testing, with end-goals of transitioning and fielding systems for the U.S. Department of Defense.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You Will:

  • Implementation of state-of-the-art and beyond-state-of-the-art friction models into a finite-element-based, elasto-hydrodynamic modeling tool in a high-performance computing environment

  • Application of an elasto-hydrodynamic modeling tool to existing systems to understand and solve operational issues

  • Application of an elasto-hydrodynamic modeling tool to novel systems during system design and development phases

  • Software development to advance and adapt modeling tools for use on novel systems and novel applications

  • Develop and maintain business relationships and programs with other ARL offices, industry, and the U.S. government

  • Contribute to the Laboratory's commitment to Penn State academic initiatives including (but not limited to) advising graduate students, membership on Graduate Faculty, publications of technical papers/journal articles, and participation at technical conferences

Non-tenure faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Software version control systems (e.g., git)

  • Parallel computing on high-performance computing systems

  • Finite element analysis

  • Effective at producing scientific reports and presenting findings/conclusions resulting from engineering analyses

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Experience with COMSOL

  • Experience measuring surface characteristics important to tribological modeling

  • Experience modeling dynamic systems including friction

  • Experience designing surface texturing to improve frictional performance

  • Active government security clearance

Your working location will be fully on-site in State College, PA. Domestic and international travel will occasionally be required.
