Driller Assistant

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Driller Assistant to join our Field Exploration team in Greensboro, North Carolina. Are you ready to contribute your skills and expand your knowledge in geotechnical drilling operations? Join us at S&ME!

As a Driller Assistant, you will assist with basic geotechnical drilling operations under the supervision of a driller. You will expand your knowledge of drilling methods, including auger, mud rotary, and rock coring operations. In addition, you will help with the transport of drill rigs and equipment while exhibiting safety, quality workmanship, and integrity. You will be dependable and open to working outdoors year-round, with the ability to travel with paid hotels and per diem for assignments.

Your Day-to-Day:



  • Drilling Operations: Assist with routine drilling operations, following established procedures and ensuring safe and efficient practices.
  • Field Sampling: Log samples and complete field logs accurately, assisting with data collection for geotechnical projects.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance to ensure proper working conditions and reduce downtime.
  • Quality: Ensure that drilling functions, including quality control, quality assurance, and verification, are performed per the standard drilling methods, project specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Safety: Support safety protocols and demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and quality in all tasks.



What You Bring:



  • A High school diploma or GED
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (preferred but not required)
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) in English
  • Knowledge of routine vehicle and equipment maintenance and the ability to perform these tasks when necessary
  • Experience with geotechnical drilling or similar field operations preferred



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough and uneven terrain while performing drilling operations
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
