About the Job

Dates: Start as soon as possible. The position is for ~12 months.

Location: The primary location will be on the University of Minnesota Saint Paul Campus. The successful candidate will be housed at the Bee Lab. Will require travel to interact with the United States Wildlife Refuges. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities

(50%) Will conduct field surveys of native bees, butterflies, and flowering plants in the wetlands of Voyageurs National Park. Sampling may be done from watercraft or in wetlands using hip waiters. This will entail camping near the park.

(30%) Project planning and management. Coordinate with National Park Service biologists to access sites as boats are required. Help writing and submitting research permits.

(20%) Manage and enter data. Assist in report writing and publications. The technician will be responsible for curating insect and plant specimens in accordance with National Park Service and University of Minnesota Insect Collections standards.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Valid US driver's license and legally able to work in the US.
  • A B.S. in Entomology, Environmental Science, Botany, Conservation Biology, Ecology, and two years of related field or equivalent work experience, or education and related experience equal to 6 years
  • Experience conducting field studies in insect ecology
  • Experience camping and working in remote areas
  • Experience with scientific data collection
  • Comfort in aquatic/wetland habitats (will not be responsible for piloting motor watercraft)
  • Dependability, punctuality, and ability to complete high-quality work with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSc in Entomology, Environmental Science, Botany, Conservation Biology, Ecology
  • Data management experience
  • Experience with pollinator identification
  • Working with or managing insect collections
About the Department

The Department of Entomology in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) is located on the St Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. It is composed of 16 faculty and 40 staff engaged in research, teaching, and extension related to biodiversity and systematics, ecology, physiology, neurobiology, and functional genomics of diverse insects and other invertebrates, including pollinators, mosquitoes and ticks, and management of pests in residential, commercial/industrial, urban, agricultural, forested, and natural landscapes. The department offers MS and PhD degrees in Entomology, and an undergraduate Insect Science Minor. The Department maintains the University of Minnesota Insect Collection, one of the largest university-affiliated insect collections in North America with over 4 million specimens, representing over 53,000 described species.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.51 - $27.33 / hourly; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
