Since 1987, through the generosity of Sage and John Cowles, University of Minnesota Dance has annually hosted four to six dance professionals of international renown in residencies ranging from one to ten weeks.

The Cowles Land Grant Chair connects nationally and internationally recognized artists and scholars with dance students, exposing them to contemporary artistry, masterwork, and new thinking in dance studies. University of Minnesota Dance is unique for its extensive use of renowned professional artists in the education and training of students.

Job duties or Responsibilities:
The Department of Theatre Arts & Dance hires several Visiting Artists in our Cowles Visiting Artist Program each academic year.

Work may include any combination of the following:

  • Commission of new choreographic work for pre-professional level dancers; or Reconstruction/Restaging of recognized/selected choreographic work
  • Rehearsal Direction and Coaching
  • Casting Audition Process
  • Guest Teaching of Dance Technique/Practice
  • Career conversations with undergraduate students relevant to the field
  • Engagement activities with pre-professional, professional or community dancers
  • Public Showing, Q&A, and/or Panel Discussion; Public Talk
  • Production Collaboration with designers
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience commensurate with a BFA in Dance
  • Currently working in the field
  • National recognition in the field

Preferred:

  • Teaching and production experience with undergraduate University students
  • International recognition in the field

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $75-$100/hour depending on education/qualifications/experience.
