Description Safe Kids Worldwide a subsidiary of Children's National. Safe Kids Worldwide is a nonprofit organization working to reduce unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14 and build equitable and sustained systems that support injury prevention. Safe Kids works with strategic partners and an extensive network of more than 400 coalitions in the U.S. to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, sleep-related deaths, falls, burns, poisonings, and more. We achieve this work through a public health approach that includes research, interventions to educate and raise awareness, safety device distribution and advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels.

The SKW Communications Specialist is responsible for writing and editing a variety of materials, including but not limited to web content, social media copy, articles, press releases, newsletters and other content to support work of Safe Kids. Supports development and implementation of media relations efforts for Safe Kids Worldwide. Responds to media inquiries and pitches media for planned campaigns. Analyzes and interprets media monitoring data from various sources and coordinates with the team to develop reports. Works with Content Advisor to direct, develop and maintain relationships with family advocates, partners, coalitions and other stakeholders. Effectively leverages media, digital content, reports and collateral to promote child injury prevention, raise awareness of the organization and deliver on our mission.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree preferably in Communications, Public Relations, or related field (Required)
Master's Degree (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
5 years experience in Communications, Public/Media relations, or related field (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Significant experience in media relations and marketing and communications strategies.
Excellent written communication skills, including writing for media, online outlets and print publications.
Excellent editing ability (both content and copy editing).
Ability to write to a broad range of audiences, include parents, funders and public health professionals.
Knowledge and comprehension of online communications and tools.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Detail-oriented, able to work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
The ability to work effectively with other staff and to follow approved Safe Kids Worldwide procedures and policies.

Functional Accountabilities
Internal and External Communications
  • Works across departments to write and/or edit internal and external materials, including research reports, funder reports and messaging directed to parents.
  • Ensures brand identity goals are met and final materials are carefully proofed.
  • Monitors the tone of all published content to ensure the brand is represented as specified in guidelines.
  • Writes and edits blogs and other materials for Safe Kids website.
  • Works across departments to keep website content updated.
  • Works closely with digital team to ensure content is optimized for search.
  • Writes guest blogs and other materials from Safe Kids for external/partner websites and newsletters.
  • Works as a part of a team to complete communications projects as needed.
  • Guides coalitions as needed in development of content and materials.
  • Supports Safe Kids social networking sites by developing content on assigned areas.
  • Monitors effectiveness of produced materials.
Media Outreach
  • Supports Safe Kids media outreach.
  • Identifies new media opportunities to support Safe Kids mission and campaign messages.
  • Analyzes coverage, identifies gaps, and develops strategies to ensure adequate and appropriate coverage.
  • Evaluates media opportunities and recommends course of action.
  • Creates/supervises development of media materials.
  • Directs response to media inquiries.
  • Prepares and supports experts for interviews.
Family Advocates
  • Works to build relationships with family advocates.
  • Prepares advocates for media during campaigns.
  • Works with family advocates on blogs, stories and other communications materials.
  • Writes speeches and prepares family advocates for events.
  • Works to identify additional family advocates.
