Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The research technician will assist the PI in conducting on-farm and laboratory experiments, to investigate the efficacy of different native probiotics and plant nutraceutical blends to improve feed efficiency and gut health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project will involve generation and interpretation of multi-omics data (genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics and proteomics) so knowledge of big data analytics is important. The research technician will be involved in the collection of fecal and ruminal samples from beef cattle and dairy cows and performing downstream laboratory analyses on the samples.
The incumbent will be using various nutritional evaluation techniques - in vitro batch culture, in situ and RUSITEC techniques. Knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology techniques is desired.

Furthermore, candidate will assist in statistical analysis of research results, and also assist in manuscript preparation/writing, as well as student supervision. Candidate should also be highly motivated and willing to learn new research techniques as necessary.
Candidate will also assist in daily management of the laboratory, maintenance (and repair) of equipment, ensuring compliance of laboratory personnel with university safety regulations, and carry out other job-relevant duties as assigned.

Work Hours 8:00am to 5:00pm on Monday-Friday adjusting hours to be available on the weekend if necessary.

The Research Technician (RT) is highly knowledgeable in the specific technical area(s) related to ruminant nutrition and stays current with developments and trends in this area. The RT is highly knowledgeable in and independently operates all instrumentation, including complex equipment and/or software used for research objectives within the laboratory and farm


Required Competency Operations - Research Support
Duties
Research Support and Management: The RT will assist the PI, independently perform specialized research procedures such as in vitro batch culture, in situ and RUSITEC techniques, microbiology, molecular, biochemical, and PCR. The RT will calculate and prepare appropriate quantities of media, reagents, and chemical solutions to ensure they are properly mixed and applied. The RT is responsible for training /supervising all students working in the laboratories (high school, undergraduate, and graduate students) in general lab safety and lab operations in experimental techniques used to conducted research and delegates lab organization and cleaning activities as required. The RT implements and uses a filing/labeling system, plans and executes short-term/long-term experiments. The RT maintains a calendar of activities and records of monthly expenses


Required Competency Data Collection/Analysis
Duties
The RT prioritizes and consistently executes experiments to assure timely completion and analysis of data. The RT will assist with word processing, preparation of spreadsheets, and statistical software. The RT identifies and reports variations or discrepancies in the data; organizes and prepare data for reports, abstracts, manuscripts, grants and presentations.
