The Certified Pharmacy Technician III aids pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care services to patients by assisting in the preparation, dispensing, record keeping, transporting, packaging, and compounding of medications for all patients including the following age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescence, adult, and geriatric.

Under minimal supervision, the Certified Pharmacy Technician III demonstrates consistent mastery, via formal assessment, within a specialized service line, including but not limited to: Automation Specialist - review, test, repair, and maintain pharmacy operating systems, Compounding Specialist - sterile and/or non-sterile medication compounding, Controlled Substance Specialist -maintain inventory and security of controlled substances, Investigational Specialist - prepare and manage investigational medication, Medication History Specialist - assist in the reconciliation of patient medications, Narcotic Diversion Specialist - proactive diversion monitoring of controlled substances, Pediatric Specialist - prepare and distribute complex medications for pediatric patients, Inventory Specialist - maintain accurate inventory controls of medication, Generalized Specialist - maintain, and consistently demonstrate, mastery in all operational areas

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR valid ExCPT certification provided by the National Health Career Association
Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy By virtue of societal trust and security explicitly imparted to pharmacies for the control of drugs, candidate/incumbent must have a clean criminal record (i.e. no felony conviction; no drug or pharmacy related convictions, including misdemeanors; no denial, suspension, revocation, or restriction of registration or licensure by any State Board of Pharmacy)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR valid ExCPT certification provided by the National Health Career Association
Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy

Experience REQUIRED:
Three years of previous pharmacy practice experience

Experience PREFERRED:
Four years of previous pharmacy practice experience in a similar setting
Previous experience in a position of formal leadership
Previous experience using a standard keyboard and typing speed of 20-30 words per minute

Education/training REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent

Education/training PREFERRED:
Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician (CSPT) Certification, and/or PTCB Assessment-Based Certificate Programs: Medication History, Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention, Technician Product Verification (TPV), Hazardous Drug Management, and/or, Billing and Reimbursement

Independent action(s) required:
Demonstrate competency in CPhT I and CPhT II responsibilities Exhibit, and maintain, expert-level mastery within a specialized area of pharmacy, such as: automation, compounding, controlled substances, inventory control, investigational services, and/or pediatrics
Maintain organization and order within area of specialization
Identify equipment or operational problems, escalating to pharmacy leadership as is necessary
Maintain paperwork and/or logs as required within specialized area
Serve as a designated trainer to other team members and students within specialized area
Serve as a role model to others with regard to the elements of Safety, Teamwork, Accountability, Relationships, and Service (STARS)
Support pharmacy department beyond specialized area, within scope of skillset

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):
Serve as the "Technician-In-Charge" during weekends, or when delegated.
Assume responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor in his/her absence, or upon delegation

Additional position requirements:
Must be available to work all shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency coverage.
