Rsch Pro 5-Research Computing - Part-time (Coughlin)

The research would focus on searches for gravitational waves with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), as well as optical counterparts with the Zwicky Transient Facility, a time-domain optical survey to study the transient night sky photometrically. Specifically, we are seeking those interested in work on machine learning, participating in our analysis of ground-based telescope and gravitational-wave data to study multi-messenger, transient objects by building machine learning pipelines in coordination with frontend Javascript/React.js interfaces.

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION:
The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications for a computational researcher position in the field of multi-messenger searches with Prof. Michael Coughlin. The appointment start date is flexible, but January 1, 2024 would be preferred. The appointment is for one year, with possibility of annual renewals depending on availability of funding. The research would focus on searches for gravitational waves with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), as well as optical counterparts with the Zwicky Transient Facility, a time-domain optical survey to study the transient night sky photometrically. Specifically, we are seeking those interested in work on production, real-time software, participating in our analysis of ground-based telescope and gravitational-wave data to study multi-messenger, transient objects by building filtering pipelines in coordination with frontend Javascript/React.js interfaces.

JOB DUTIES:
60%: Research in the development and application of real time data science algorithms for software in the Python, Rust and JavaScript languages.

20% Supervision of post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians, and undergraduates participating in this research, focusing on best software practices and code management skills, including unit testing, reviews, and continuous integration and deployment.

10%: Manuscript and grant preparation focused on software developed and its longer term support.

10%: Communicate and coordinate with other personnel involved in the research, including those from non-computing disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Required. PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics with one or more years of research training by beginning date of appointment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
3-5+ years' relevant work experience.
Demonstrated skills (or ability to learn quickly) in any of the following: programming (especially Python / Rust),
data science, machine learning, and statistics.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong collaboration skills.
Strong desire to learn new computing platforms.

Pay Range: The 100% annual salary for this position will be $58,942.79 to $75,000, depending on education/qualifications/experience.**

Time Appointment: 50%-74% Appointment
