Description
In collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care delivery team, under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Dialysis Technician will perform basic nursing care activities. Will maintain a safe, clean, stocked patient care setting, assist staff members and help direct patient flow.
Qualifications
Minimum Education High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Minimum Work Experience 1 year experience in a pediatric health care setting (Preferred)
Required Skills/Knowledge Knowledge of aseptic technique. Basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Human relations and interpersonal skills. Demonstrates non-judgmental behavior.
Required Licenses and Certifications Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required) Patient Care Technician (CPCT) (Required) Nationally recognized dialysis technician certification 1 1/2 Yrs (Required)
Functional Accountabilities Patient Care
- Orient family to use of call lights, monitor and unit, etc.; perform vital signs, height, weight and head circumference.
- Provide daily bath, skin care, mouth care and peri-care; apply skins creams as directed by RN.
- Ensure proper nutrition as ordered (ng, gt, or tray); care of tube feeding and feeding of patients.
- Recognize and report pain and skin breakdown.
- Assist in performance of trach care, EVD, central line dressing, pin care, cast and traction care and care for dying patients.
- Collect cultures of urine and stool samples, etc.
Patient Care Support
- Assist with patient flow and maintain a neat and orderly environment.
- Assist with preparation of room for discharge and admission.
- Set up monitor and alarms.
- Obtain equipment and supplies and maintain PAR levels.
- Prioritize tasks and special requests from RN.
- Document on nursing database, flow sheets and vital signs in a timely manner and notify charge nurse appropriate in computer or chart as suitable.
Surveillance and Infection control
- Observe and alert RN when there are monitor deviations.
- When assigned to monitor bank, folow the monitor guidelines to dress code and professionalism.
- Care for isolation patients.
- Adhere to hand washing before and after every patient.
- Clean equipment after each patient's use.
Staff Relations
- Communicate effectively with RN and team members to achieve goals; report any changes, abnormal findings, and participate in beginning and end of shift reports.
- Maintain professional relationships with patients and families; support a family-centered care environment.
- Resolve conflict with co-workers appropriately.
- Communicate with RN on all patient care activities at least every hour.
- Notify charge nurse when leaving and returning to the unit for any reason.
- Keep informed about council meetings and unit issues; participate in shared decision making through contributing to unit discussion and support shared leadership decisions.
Conducts self Responsibly
- Insert from Unit communications associate Follows all Hospital / Departmental policies/procedures.
- Remain on unit during assigned shift, notify Charge Nurse and appropriate staff members when leaving the unit for patient care related errands.
- Use designated staff areas for eating, smoking, and socializing (performed only during assigned breaks).
- Leave patient care area when assigned shift is completed, replacement staff member is present, and report is given.
- Use downtime productively during shift.
- Attend mandatory in-services/educational programs to learn about new procedures, skills, products, equipment; attend staff meetings.
Dialysis Functions
- Initiate, monitor and terminate chronic outpatient hemodialysis treatments according to established protocols
- Set-up and prepare dialysis machine according to prescription
- Breakdown dialysis machine and ensure dialysis equipment is cleaned per policy
