Socal Gas is seeking qualified candidates for the Automotive Fleet Technician Position at the Santa Barbara Base Location. Starting Pay will be $46.78/hr

Primary Purpose:

The qualified candidate will perform vehicle and construction equipment problem diagnosis, repairs and preventative maintenance to ensure their uninterrupted and safe operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Performs duties within Company guidelines and established safety procedures
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled vehicle maintenance on all Company vehicles, construction equipment, garage equipment and natural gas vehicle (NGV) compressors based on manufacturers' specifications or standards set forth in Company Practices and Procedures.
  • Interprets guidelines and makes judgments in the diagnosis and repair/replace decisions needed to solve each mechanical or electrical problem faced.
  • Verifies that all vehicles and equipment assigned to the base receive a thorough "A" or "B" service at the time indicated by the Company's standard preventative maintenance schedule. "A" service includes tires, cooling system, battery system, engine compartment and dual fuel ignition interrupter switch. "B" maintenance service provides most of the lubrication, adjustment and maintenance needed by a vehicle.
  • Analyzes operating complaints by users and initiates repairs necessary to satisfy difficulties. Road tests vehicles and equipment as part of the "B" service or as the result of driver requests and notes indications of malfunction.
  • Determines the need to adjust, repair or replace parts or assemblies, employing the most economical method and using such instruments as infra-red testers and oscilloscopes and other instruments. Makes the needed repairs or adjustments or arranges for outside repair in a manner that will minimize vehicle downtime failures, maintenance cost and harmful exhaust emissions.
  • Checks ignition, fuel, cooling, electrical, drive, braking and handling systems. Disassembles and repairs engine components such as alternators, carburetors, distributors, natural gas control valves, regulators, clutches, transmissions, brakes, light circuits, wheel bearings, tie rods, warning devices, gauges, hydraulic cylinders and valves, hoses, vacuum switches, throttle controls, air brakes, rheostats, winches, cranes, air compressors, welders and their regulating devices, etc. May perform minor brazing and welding.
  • Follows regulatory requirements and Company procedures as required.
  • Records work performed on Company documents in accordance with Company Form Instructions and keeps a maintenance history file on all vehicles in the area.
  • On occasion, trains and furnishes guidance to the Auto Service Assistants.
  • Maintains Automotive Memo manual and familiarizes self with applicable Automotive Formal Communication documents. May notify drivers of assigned vehicles or their supervisors that their vehicles are due for service and arranges a loan vehicle if necessary.
  • Assists the Lead Auto Mechanic in maintaining sufficient levels of automotive parts inventory conductive to efficient operation.
  • Deals with vendors for inventory orders, deliveries and supplies, as well as with outside repair agencies when it is cost effective to have the work done outside. Returns obsolete parts for credit.
  • Performs various other equivalent and lower-grade functions



Contacts

Frequent contact with supervisor, co-workers, field personnel, auto parts dealers, suppliers, auto repair vendors, etc. Occasional contact with California Highway Patrol, government personnel, general public.

Minimum Qualifications

H.S. Diploma/GED or higher Required. Requires a valid California Driver's License (some assignments require a class A license); Formal Auto Mechanic training; Knowledge of the operating characteristics of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic-driven equipment; Basic math.; Certification from Trade/Vocational school or Community College for Automotive Technology or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) for engine performance (A8), advanced engine performance (L1) electrical (A6), or Master Mechanic Certificate. Must pass a pre-qualification examination.

***Smog inspection and repair certification desired.

Other Qualifications

Experience with Alternative fuel vehicles, e.g., natural gas, propane, electric powered vehicles; Experience in preparing written reports and completing forms; Good communication skills

Other Must be able to work swing shift, overtime and emergency call-outs; Legible handwriting

Physical Demands Heavy - Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 50 pounds with lifting up to approximately 100 pounds as required. Bends over vehicles; Stands for extended periods of time Environmental Conditions Works in a garage environment, sometimes performs work in the yard or field (emergency repairs) in all weather conditions.

Subject to noise of operating vehicles, fumes, dirt, grease; works with different chemicals, solvents, gas, oil, etc. Equipment Refrigerant (R12) recovery and recycling system; Sun Engine Analyzer (oscilloscope); Emission Analyzer (smog tester); Sun VAT 40V's electrical systems; Digital Volt, Ohm meters; Forklift; Various hand tools (ratchets, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.); Tire changing machine; Vehicle hoists; Wheel balancer; Hepa asbestos vacuum; Automobile jacks and stands; Hydraulic brake bleeding equipment; Grinder; Drill press; High pressure steam cleaner; Battery-charging equipment; Safety gear/clothing (uniforms, eye protection, gloves, respirators, safety shoes, etc.)
