Primary Duties & Responsibilities

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will develop integrated solutions, modernizing, consolidating and coordinating independently-designed applications to meet business needs. Partnering with Architecture and in keeping with development best practices, you will analyze business/functional specifications to deliver quality applications/systems while minimizing cost and optimizing maintainability. In converting high-level architectural design into detailed application design, you will provide estimates, evaluate software, make buy vs. build recommendations, and establish development environments. Above all, you are a strategic thinker; you take ownership of issues, moving between diverse tasks with cooperation and persistence to motivate and bring out the best in those around you. Campus Event & Experiences is growing in the need for technical development and support with new vendors and technologies being driven by our Workplace of the future and eventually opening of New North with support of campuses in Milwaukee and New York.

Essential Skills for Senior Software Engineering Role:

  • The primary skill set: (note: if you don't have all of these skills, you must have the desire to learn these tools).
    • Cloud and DevOps experiences - AWS (RDS, S3, Lambda, CloudFront, EC2), REST APIs, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Jenkins, Terraform, Packer, CICD
    • Programming experiences either front end or back end with Java, Spring Framework, Python, XML, JSON, Java Script, Node.js, CSS, HTML5
    • Build and Testing tools - Gradle/Maven, Junit/Jest, Kevlar/Cucumber
    • Repositories - Git, Gitlab/Github, Nexus/Artifactory,
    • Strong understanding and experience in Databases, Data movement and SQL (Python, API's, MSSQL server or similar ETL tool)
    • Application Servers - Tomcat, Apache,IIS, Express
  • Having an agile mindset and working with Safe Principles, Scrum and tools like JIRA is required Support would also include vendor packages in this area. Any knowledge with networking (system process/integration) or PC/LAN knowledge is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 4-5+ years professional experience required
  • 4-5+ years of experience working with modern engineering tools, languages and practices
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, ownership mindset and continuous learning
  • Experience developing solutions using agile methods
  • Mentor for the team and department
  • Advanced skillset in one or more technical platforms
  • Capable of communicating between product, engineering, and the business
  • Manages own time to meet objectives
  • Ability to perform peer reviews on code and design
  • Solid understanding of design patterns and architecture

Pay Range - Start:

$100,030.00

Pay Range - End:

$185,770.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Please note that the salary range listed in the posting is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
