What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Org 2950 R&D Science and Engineering Senior Manager, located in either CA or NM , to lead a team of Level I Managers and Departments of Design Engineers, in intimate collaboration with Group 2960. You will be responsible for managing multiple functions and leading managers and staff as they interface across many technical domains and products where Sandia serves as both the Design and Production Agency.

The Design Engineering organizations partner with others to provide electrical and mechanical design for SPP and ND programs across the laboratory. Design Engineering also partners inside and outside Sandia, serving a leadership role on model-based design and design for manufacture and assembly. We have design engineering teams located in both Sandia California and Sandia New Mexico, and close partnerships are required, independent of location.

On any given day, you may be called on to:



  • Lead managers and staff as they interface across multiple technical domains, ensuring delivery to multiple programs.

  • Team closely with peers and partners across the Labs, as well as with the broader Nuclear Security Enterprise community, with special partnership with the Kansas City Nuclear Security Campus.

  • Guide the technical work and strategic direction of the group; exhibit a thorough understanding of the capabilities of the integrated 2950/2960 portfolio, and continuously improve the health and reputation of the organization.

  • Regularly interact with executives and/or major customers from multiple subject areas. Interactions frequently involve effective persuasive communication skills to negotiate with partners and influence leaders across the organization, often in sensitive situations.

  • Oversee and co-manage the integrated 2950/2960 Level I managers and Design Engineering Staff, including hiring, professional development, performance management, technical risk assessment and communication, and defect prevention consistent with the Center's mission; guide Level I managers and staff in connecting their work/capabilities to customer needs, organizational goals, and Sandia's mission.

  • As needed, participate in and provide feedback for corporate development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.



Salary Range:

$184,400 - $313,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:



  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and ten (10) years of directly related relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and experience. *Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

  • Active US DOE-Q or DOD TS security clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance.



Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Senior Manager candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:



  • Five or more years of demonstrated leadership and management experience.

  • A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).

  • Experience driving continuous improvement in support of safety, security, quality, delivery, and cost initiatives.

  • Background in nuclear weapon design, production, and stockpile activities for both systems and components.



About Our Team:

Sandia's "Design Engineering Group" consists of multiple mechanical and electrical design departments that provide design engineering services using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software such as PTC Creo, Mentor Graphics, and other 3D modeling tools. We partner with engineering teams across the lab to produce innovative design solutions based on high-quality CAD models and drawings. We develop and communicate design options and recommended approaches to product development teams, stakeholders, and manufacturing partners. We apply technical judgment based upon engineering principles in the design and development of innovative products in support of our Nation's security programs. Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
