JOB TITLE: Mouse Husbandry and Laboratory Aide JOB PURPOSE: The main purpose of this position is the care and maintenance of a mouse colony for neuroscience and animal behavior research in the Zoology and Physiology Department. This includes mouse husbandry, including weekend health checks to remain in compliance with IACUC regulations. Based on level of interest and demonstrated ability, the applicant may also conduct experiments related to the research focus of the Bedford Lab. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Change and clean mouse cages; - Operate cage washer to wash dirty cages; - Feed and water mice; - Wash and fill water bottles; - Perform detailed routine health checks on entire mouse colony; - Administer treatments to mice (injections, topical cream applications, toenail clipping); - Monitor breeding colony and track litter births; - Maintain paper and electronic records of all mice; - Monitor weanling-age mice; - Clean mouse rooms (sweeping, mopping, cleaning surfaces, reorganizing); - Take inventory of mouse supplies and materials in mouse room; - Check ventilation and water filtration on mouse racks; - Communicate with supervisor and mouse personnel about the state of the mouse colony. SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: - Perform laboratory tasks such as tissue staining, slicing, and sample preparation based on interest and skills. - Maintain hygienic lab space (sweeping, mopping, washing and autoclaving glassware, cleaning lab surfaces, etc.); - Be able to keep a consistent working schedule every semester. The working schedule can be adjusted to your class schedule at the beginning of every semester. - Be able to work during weekends and holidays. Pre-arranged shift coverage with colleagues is available. - Commitment to work until June 30 th 2025 (renewal contingent upon funding). COMPETENCIES: This position requires attention to detail, consistency, and problem identification/solving skills. The position also requires honesty, clarity, and strong communication with the PI and Lab members. Additionally, the candidate should be comfortable working both independently and with a team. REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: We do not expect the candidate to have previous laboratory experience and will provide all necessary training; however, an interest in animals and desire to provide compassionate and exceptional animal husbandry is essential. Students of any major are appropriate as long as they have the willingness to learn! Please be aware that the position requires direct work with rodents, animal waste, and pine bedding. Personal protective equipment is provided if candidate has sensitivities to the smell of rodent waste/bedding. The position also requires the student to work on their feet for extended periods of time. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A background in veterinary and animal science or equivalent is helpful, but not required for vivarium work. Knowledge of molecular biology/chemistry is helpful for laboratory work but also not required.
