The Extreme Weather and Urban Sustainability (TExUS) Lab is looking for a Research Scientist Assistant to work as an interface with urban climate and weather research with community partners and the city of Austin.

Purpose

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual-focused Research Scientist Assistant to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in environmental science, experience working and coordinating with community organizations, experience with projects in the built environment, programming, and digital communications, and strong writing and organizational skills. The candidate will be based at UT Austin and be affiliated with the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The individual will have the opportunity to actively collaborate with different research groups in Austin, specifically with the UT-City Climate CoLab, the City of Austin, and community organizations within the city of Austin. Austin is a highly vibrant city and provides access to numerous activities beyond the research and academic experience through UT Austin. Under the supervision of Dr. Dev Niyogi, this position will focus on working on projects related to urban weather and climate and acting as a bridge in understanding the needs of various community groups the team works with, collaborating with the City of Austin, assisting in grant development and writing, working with coordination and needs within the department and TExUS Lab, and assist in planning and coordination within lab operations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform assignments, requiring at least a basic working knowledge of engineering or scientific methods, in such areas as research, design, or experimental testing.

  • Responsible for assignments that require the technical knowledge to modify or adapt routine procedures under the direction of a supervisor, to meet special research requirements.

  • Make or record observations and measurements. Perform detailed analyses, tests and operations.

  • Data integration from different in-situ and remotes senses platforms.

  • Work with different stakeholders to help develop customized data and tools or products, work with community and city groups and collaborate or lead different tasks of geoscience centric projects and activities to develop bridge of lab research and develop communications.

  • Prepare portions of technical reports, aspects of computer programs, and specific sections of project plans. Also participate in technical editing, research reports, manuscripts.

Required Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in Geosciences, Environmental Science, Engineering, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, Conservation, or related field.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Field experience with observational, in-situ, and satellite and remote sensing data.

  • Experience working on federal grants/projects (example: NSF, NASA, NOAA, DOE), and with national and international organizations (example: UCAR/NCAR, UNESCO ).

  • Evidence of collaborating on papers, project reports, and manuscript writing.

  • Experience with organizing, coordinating, and planning, activities with various community groups, non-profits, national labs, and universities.

  • Experience working with datasets and general data analysis using Python, GIS, and/or R Studio.

  • Ability to mentor and work with multidisciplinary team members.

  • Ability to work within a team environment and independently, and experience organization and coordinating within a university department.

  • Ability to analyze and diagnose the needs of community groups and identify parallels in scientific tools and datasets available.

  • Outreach extension background, especially with community groups, and artists.

Salary Range

$48,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Working at UT Main Campus and around the City of Austin with other community groups and the City of Austin
