The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and is seeking a senior-level, highly motivated leader to join APL's Legal and Commercialization Branch.

Reporting to APL's General Counsel and Special Assistant to the Director, the leader of the Laboratory's office for technology transfer will drive the development and strategic management of APL's intellectual property (IP) portfolio, orchestrate the commercialization of APL IP, forge new partnerships, and be a catalyst for designing and executing entrepreneurship initiatives that support APL's Centennial Vision.

As the leader of APL's Tech Transfer:

  • You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of APL's technology transfer program to drive a dynamic innovation ecosystem by responsibly transferring knowledge and technology with speed and transparency, fostering strategic partnerships to support research and development, and identifying global technological advances to accelerate the development of capabilities by APL.
  • You will provide strategic management of APL's IP portfolio with a vision and strategy to grow licensing and partnership activity to include regular collaboration with APL's executive team.
  • You will support APL's entrepreneurial programs by identifying opportunities to foster start-up companies that leverage APL IP.
  • You will provide thought leadership in the structure and negotiation of high-value IP agreements and mutually beneficial research collaborations that support APL's core purpose.
  • You will strengthen the partnership with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, forge relationships with key external stakeholders, and reinforce ties with local and regional business community leaders.
  • You will supervise a team of technology transfer professionals who manage APL's IP and support staff throughout the Laboratory in protecting, licensing, and transferring IP. You will provide career development, coaching, supervision, and support to the Tech Transfer team; encourage professional growth and leadership development of staff supervised; and promote effective collaboration and relationship building among the Tech Transfer group and across the Laboratory.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Possess a Master's degree in engineering, life/physical sciences, or other STEM discipline or an MBA with an undergraduate degree in engineering, life/physical sciences, or other STEM discipline.
  • Have 15+ years of professional experience leading and developing programs that promote research and development and that commercialize IP through partnerships with innovators, business leaders, and investors.
  • Have demonstrated success in leading IP management, license negotiation, and the commercialization of research.
  • Have 10+ years effectively leading and inspiring high-performing teams.
  • Possess exceptional oral and written communication skills, a strong customer-service orientation, and a keen sense of professionalism and collegiality even in stressful situations.
  • Are well organized, detail-oriented, and have the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at the same time.
  • Collaborated with and briefed C-Suite level executives.
  • Are personally well-connected in the venture, startup, and/or commercial tech communities.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.'

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have experience leading a technology transfer office.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of University Affiliated Research Centers and Trusted Agent roles.
  • Have worked in both academic and non-academic R&D environments.
  • Hold a PhD in engineering, life/physical sciences, or other STEM discipline.
  • Have applicable experience with non-traditional defense companies, start-ups, venture capital, the private sector, and/or the U.S. Department of Defense or NASA.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
