I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The Center for Career Services is GW's central career services office supporting students and alumni in their career and professional development. Through personal career coaching and professional interpretations of career assessments, specialized career development programs, and premier internship opportunities and connections with top-tier employers, they help students realize and advance their career and professional goals. The career services team is innovative, energized, and committed to creating a positive environment for students and alumni to discover their best selves.

The position, as part of the Career Learning and Experiences ( CLE) Team, develops and engages students by creating and sustaining access to developmental programs that support undecided students, especially first- and second-year students, in self-awareness and self-knowledge; career and academic major exploration; and preparation for volunteer, leadership, research, and internship opportunities.

Reporting to the Director for Career Learning and Experiences, the Career Coach, Exploration will be responsible for the following:

  • Conducts individual career coaching sessions with students, primarily undergraduates who are undecided about or exploring various career and academic major options and provides support through individual and group professional interpretations of career assessments such as the Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI, and CliftonStrengths.
  • Supervise, recruit, hire, and train student Career Ambassadors with support of CLE team. Student Career Ambassadors facilitate 1:1 drop-in coaching hours, support center events, and deliver presentations to students on basic career development skills.
  • Provides individual career coaching, career management education to help students and alumni, through assessment of student/alumni goals and interests, resume, and cover letter review, networking techniques, self-branding, and effective job/internship search tactics to ensure market- and employer-readiness.
  • The position partners with Industry Career Coaches to support targeted coaching for particular career fields.
  • Develops, delivers, and evaluates career development programs to build professional/career skills of students, and may conduct and/or customize meetings and presentations with students in person and through group workshops and classes. The position may also assist with the collection and reporting of statistics on student outcomes.
  • Managing administrative tasks, which may include coordination and organization of technology and career resources such as Handshake, Google Docs, and career services social media; scheduling of coaching and career programming; resource assessment and evaluation; and administration of career assessments such as the Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI, and CliftonStrengths.
  • Establishing and enhancing collaborative relationships with designated campus partners, student groups, academic departments, or outside groups, especially those serving underrepresented populations; preparing and teaching career management classes; and other programs as needed to support career outreach initiatives and student engagement across the Foggy Bottom and Mt. Vernon campuses.
  • Additional responsibilities include participating in career services events such as career fairs and expos, new student orientation, and parent and family programming, and serving on CCS and/or cross-department committees.


The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or 2+ years of experience preferred.
  • Professional experience and education in career coaching, counseling, career development, experiential learning, educational program development and delivery, self-assessment, or related fields is desired.
  • Qualification and experience to interpret Strong Interest Inventory, CliftonStrengths, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and other career-related assessment tools and inventories, such as card sorts, and skills and values exercises, is preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education, including working knowledge of coaching, counseling, and student development theories and practices with college students, is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across diverse groups and contribute to inclusivity in the campus community.
  • Experience developing collaborative partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders, ideally working with faculty, academic advisors, residence life/student affairs, student organizations, and alumni.
  • Experience working with web-based communication and collaboration tools, such as Google Suite, Handshake, VMock, PeopleGrove, Interstride, Adobe Creative Suite, LinkedIn, Canva, WebEx, Zoom and course management systems such as Blackboard is preferred.
  • Strong communication, presentation, writing and editing, project management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supervising students in peer advising or similar roles is desired.


Hiring Range $57,553.66 - $79,165.63
