Optum AI is UnitedHealth Group's enterprise AI team. We are AI/ML scientists and engineers with deep expertise in AI/ML engineering for health care. We develop AI/ML solutions for the highest impact opportunities across UnitedHealth Group businesses including UnitedHealthcare, Optum Financial, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. In addition to transforming the health care journey through responsible AI/ML innovation, our charter also includes developing and supporting an enterprise AI/ML development platform.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Develop and implement AI and machine learning strategies to drive healthcare solutions, build and test machine learning and deep learning models
  • Implement and design novel machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI approaches inspired by relevant literature
  • Build robust machine learning pipelines to support production processes
  • Process and transform source data to be used in machine learning pipelines, leveraging cloud computing
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine applicability of AI to business problems
  • Design, plan, and prioritize experiments
  • Communicate findings with business stakeholders and collaborate to develop solutions that meet customer needs
  • Develop code and model documentation and assist with model governance approvals
  • Closely collaborate with the Responsible Use of AI (RUAI) team to ensure that the delivered solutions are compliant with the company policies and standards. Develop code and documentation to assist with model governance
  • Clearly document and following best coding practices with Python packages, etc. along with the use of GitHub
  • Create and present presentations in the form of presentations and written documents of analysis results to Optum AI and business leaders

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related quantitative field and 6+ years of industry/academic experience in machine learning or a related field OR Master's degree in computer science or related quantitative field and 4+ years of industry/academic experience in machine learning or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience with Python, Spark (Databricks), DevOps Tools (Github Actions, Docker, etc.)
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience implementing and training deep learning models, statistical analysis, and expertise in LLMs
  • Understanding of mathematical foundations of machine learning, including statistics, linear algebra, and computer science


Preferred Qualifications:



  • PhD in computer science, machine learning, statistics, engineering, mathematics, or another STEM discipline
  • Experience with actuarial models
  • Experience working in an interdisciplinary environment, particularly in engineering and medicine
  • Demonstrated track record of patents and/or scientific publications in machine learning or a related field
  • Work on health-related fields (e.g., biomedical informatics, bioinformatics, biomathematics)
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative and fluid work environment
  • Effective communication skills, including in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Solid written communication skills of scientific material

The salary range for this role is $106,800 to $194,200 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
