Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Additional Details
The Graduate Research Assistant ( GRA) is a doctoral graduate student enrolled in
accordance with their plan of study and is assigned to work in a faculty member's discipline and to provide fundamental support for a faculty member's research. Duties of research assistants include all tasks needed to pursue research in a given area, including:

  • Assisting with research design of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies
  • Development and dissemination of marketing materials for research recruitment
  • Data collection, data entry, and data analysis
  • Managing and preparing large-scale databases for analysis
  • Reviewing and synthesizing research literature
  • Performing literature reviews, and other library tasks
  • Assisting with grant applications
  • Writing reports
  • Writing and collaborating with faculty supervisor on manuscripts, policy briefs, and other publications
  • Drafting and writing conference proposals
  • Presenting research at academic conferences and other forums
  • Copy-editing, copying, filing, and collating
  • Supporting faculty member's instructional needs as necessary
  • Assisting with logistical and programmatic needs for research
  • Attending and supporting research team meetings
  • Assisting with organizing the office
  • Assisting with calendar management
  • Assisting with program management needs (communications and marketing)
  • Assisting with editorial management tasks (communication with authors, editors, running journal reports, journal marketing, etc.)
  • Other research-related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.

The successful candidate must meet the following minimum qualifications

  • Interest in research and expanding the body of knowledge on issues impacting underrepresented populations in higher education
  • A strong candidate is detail-oriented and finds energy in organizing information
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and a commitment to following through on projects
  • Ability to engage with supervisors, collaborators, and other staff members with respect and professionalism
  • Proficiency in providing information effectively, both written and verbally
  • A strong candidate should be able to communicate their ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Enthusiasm to take initiative on projects and tasks
  • Willingness to seek and receive feedback from others.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Ability to adhere to and meet deadlines and due dates
  • Ability to communicate in a timely manner
  • Interest in collaboration and ability to hold themselves accountable
  • Skilled in the use of computers and appropriate software i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS, Nvivo, Atlas.ti (training will be provided as needed)
  • Ability to relate well to others, especially students and student groups
  • Ability to engage with staff members in a professional setting
  • Ability to fulfill job responsibilities promptly and professionally and produce high-quality work

Additional Minimum Qualifications
Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) must be admitted to a doctoral program in the
Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education.
