Job Summary
Under general supervision, supervises and directs the activities of Paramedic Dispatchers at the Denver 9-1-1 Communications Center. Answers emergency and non-emergency phone calls and provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) screening of calls. Provides oversight of line dispatchers to ensure appropriate resource allocation to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) calls for service. Acts as department liaison to internal and external groups.
Essential Functions:
- Shift Supervision
Provides direct and indirect supervision of Paramedic Dispatchers and ensures appropriate response of emergency medical services to the public. Adjusts schedules, investigates and responds to complaints, responds to queries from employees and provides direction as required. Acts as a liaison for ancillary agencies and the public. (40%) - Team Supervision
Mentors, monitors, and supervises a dedicated team of dispatchers. Writes and delivers performance evaluations, ensures that all team members maintain departmental standards, receive monthly feedback, and meet all DHPD and DHHA requirements. (40%) - Program Management
Independently manages a sub-program of the department, such as scheduling or uniform purchasing and issue. Tasks will vary depending on specific assignment. Ensures that their assigned sub-program runs smoothly and efficiently. (10%) - Assists in the development, implementation, and interpretation of both Agency and Division principles and practices. Enforces policy issues involving dispatch in concert with the Chief Paramedic and his/her designee. (5%)
- Ability to function as a dispatcher and call taker. Ability to receive and dispatch medical emergencies using EMD and all appropriate policy and procedures. (5%)
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Work Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years increasingly responsible communications center dispatching and call taking experience in a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) including one (1) year supervisory experience and/or experience providing technical training (or a combination of education, training, and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform required job duties.)
- Ambulance Dispatch experience preferred.
Licenses/certifications:
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
- NAOEDEMD-National Academy of Emergency Dispatch - IAED - International Academies of Emergency Dispatch required.
- DLR-Colorado Driver's License Class R - DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles required.
- EMD (EMD-Q preferred), CJIS certifications must be obtained within three (3) months of hire.
- ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 must be obtained within three (3) months of hire. ICS 300/400 preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles of emergency communications for a large Public Safety Answer Point (PSAP) including telecommunications, radio, and CAD equipment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to maintain professional behavior to plan, organize, and supervise the work staff, including developing and implementing work plans to achieve organizational unit mission, goals, and performance measures.
- Skill in supervising assigned personnel. Skill in communicating with persons in highly stressful situations. Ability to work under stress and use good judgment in emergencies.
- Ability to communicate effectively with verbal, written, and electronic communication, in a constructive and informative manner.
- Ability to respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, other personnel, and ancillary services in a courteous and professional manner.
