Position Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned and technically proficient Control Panel Application Engineer with expertise in electric heating system control architectures. This role focuses on supporting project quoting and customer engagement for medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) electric heating systems. The ideal candidate will have strong familiarity with UL 508A, UL 347, and IEC 62447, and a solid understanding of power switching methods, system architecture, and industrial electrical distribution.

Key Responsibilities:

System Architecture & Quoting

  • Develop control panel architecture concepts for electric heating systems, balancing performance, safety, and cost considerations.
  • Support technical proposals by evaluating power switching needs (SCRs, contactors, bypass schemes, soft starters, etc.) and control strategies based on load characteristics and customer requirements.
  • Estimate project scope and cost based on system layout, power requirements (LV/MV), enclosure types, and applicable codes/standards.
  • Lead the technical portion of customer quote reviews, presenting system-level solutions and value propositions.

Power Switching & Compliance

  • Advise on selection and application of power switching technologies across various voltage classes and heating profiles (resistive loads, fast-switching requirements, high inrush, etc.).
  • Ensure proposed system designs meet applicable standards, including:

    • UL 508A - Industrial control panel safety
    • UL 347 - MV switching and protection equipment
    • IEC 62447 - International electrical safety coordination and interface protection

  • Support risk assessment related to system protection coordination, arc flash mitigation, and component ratings.

Technical Support & Communication

  • Act as technical liaison between sales, engineering, and customer teams, helping interpret specifications and develop tailored solutions.
  • Respond to RFQs and customer inquiries with clear, compliant, and technically sound recommendations.
  • Provide guidance on heat load control logic, zone management, load balancing, and integration with PLC/DCS systems (without developing detailed ladder logic or schematics).

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work with internal engineering and production teams to validate feasibility of proposed system architectures.
  • Assist in the development of high-level one-line diagrams, functional overviews, and proposal documentation for submittals and customer presentations.
  • Support UL file management and coordinate pre-compliance evaluation as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or equivalent technical background.
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial control systems, electric heating applications, or power distribution.
  • Deep understanding of power switching methods and system-level control panel architecture in both LV (up to 600V) and MV (up to 15kV) applications.
  • Strong working knowledge of UL 508A, UL 347, and IEC 62447, particularly regarding panel construction, switching protection, and safety compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret high-level electrical documentation and customer specs.
  • Comfortable discussing system sizing, load profiles, and industrial heating logic with both engineering and commercial stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting MV heater panels (e.g., 4160V, 6900V) and associated interlocks and protection schemes.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 70E, IEC, UL,CE, and CSA standards.
  • Understanding of industrial process heating applications (e.g., oil & gas, chemical, water treatment).
  • Experience in customer-facing technical roles or technical sales support.

Work Environment:

  • Office-based, with 25% travel for customer meetings, site assessments, or technical reviews.
  • Occasional collaboration with panel shop or UL inspectors may be required.
