SPS) reports to the division of Academic Affairs, under the leadership of the Associate Provost. The School of Professional Studies works collaboratively with departments, colleges, and academic support units to ensure integrated partnerships for enrollment growth, student success, and faculty effectiveness in teaching. |
Primary Purpose of Position |
The Associate Director of Student Services is a leadership role within the School of Professional Studies at
UNC Charlotte that serves as the primary academic advisor for students in the BS in Professional Studies (
PROS) program and supervises a team of program and student support specialists for both credit and noncredit programs. This position will collaborate strategically with campus units such as Undergraduate Education (
UGE) and New Student Orientation (
NSO), and University College (
UCOL) to support academic pathways and progression for Charlotte Online undergraduates, initiate retention strategies, and lead early intervention efforts for students at risk of withdrawal. In partnership with the Associate Director for Enrollment Management, the role will also support readmission initiatives and outreach to "eligible but not enrolled" students. To best serve post-traditional learners, the Associate Director will establish occasional evening advising availability (1-2 days per week, as needed) during peak advising periods from November to December and April to August. This position may also include opportunities to teach capstone or topics courses within the Professional Studies major. |
Summary of Position Responsibilities |
The Associate Director of Student Services is a seasoned, student-focus leader dedicated to enhancing the student experience. This position plays a critical role in advancing student success by serving as the primary academic advisor for students in the Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies (
PROS) program, while also supervising a team of program and student support specialists who serve both credit and noncredit learners. The Associate Director will collaborate with key campus partners including Undergraduate Education (
UGE), New Student Orientation (
NSO), and University College (
UCOL) to support academic progression, lead early intervention strategies for at-risk students, and contribute to student retention and re-engagement initiatives. In partnership with Enrollment Management, the Associate Director will also support outreach to students who are eligible but not currently enrolled. Occasional evening advising will be required during peak advising periods to better serve post-traditional learners. This role includes opportunities to teach within the Professional Studies, B.S. curriculum and to lead programmatic efforts that promote holistic, data-informed advising. This Associate Director is a collaborative leader with experience in academic advising, student success initiatives, team supervision, and cross-campus engagement. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
- Requires a minimum of a Master's degree
- 2 to 3 years of experience in academic advising, student services, and/or higher education administration.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
- Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Services, or a related field.
- Knowledge of advising technologies and data systems used for student tracking and intervention.
- Previous experience teaching in higher education, particularly in professional studies or related fields.
- Proven ability to supervise and lead teams, with a focus on mentorship and professional development.
- Experience working with online or post-traditional student populations.
- Strong understanding of student retention strategies and enrollment management processes.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple departments and stakeholders to support student success.
