Age Specific Responsibility Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Summary As an employee of the Mary Free Bed Medical Group (MFBMG), and working as a representative of this physician group, the MFBMG APP works in coordination with the physicians within the MFBMG to:
- Provide timely response to acute care hospital consultations
- Screen patients for appropriateness of inpatient admission to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital using the MFB admission criteria
- Communicate with the consulting physician and report the decision of the physician to the patient, family members, and the discharge planner from the referring hospital
- Complete admission assessments, history and physical documentation, and admission orders for new admissions for physicians within the MFBMG, within approved PA protocols.
- Assist with daily physician rounding, patient/family education and collaborating with the nursing and therapy staff to respond to patient care needs when these occur.
- Assist with discharge planning and completion of discharge summaries in collaboration with the physician.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Staff will provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation.
- For MFBMG Consults: Assures the timely and efficient response to consultations for the rehabilitation physician. Obtains and prepares relevant information for the physician to review. Communicates the decision of the MFBMG physician to the patient, family, and discharge planner from the referring hospital in a clear and positive manner. Working with the MFBMG physician, completes medical record documentation in accordance with referring hospital's policies and procedures.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with all referral's sources, MFB employees, consulting physicians, and MFBMG physicians and staff. Facilitates professional communication with each employee of the referring hospital, MFB, and the MFBMG. Demonstrates excellent customer service standards and behaviors. Encourages, coaches, and monitors teamwork and direct communication with co-workers. Deals discreetly and sensitively with confidential information.
- Monitors customer satisfaction and facilitates problem solving with the MFBMG physicians, patients and families, and referral sources. Encourages a culture of personal accountability, solution-seeking behavior, mutual respect, open communication, openness to change, enthusiasm, and pride.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of PM&R by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars, and other related activities. Maintains the professional competence, knowledge, and skills necessary for all responsibilities. Completes required training and education, including department specific requirements.
- For MFB inpatients: Performs admission or consultation assessment (H&P) for new patients, including an assessment of the patient and the medical records from the referring hospital. Completes a history and physical within a timely manner, and as directed by the attending physician, writes admission orders under approved protocols after reconciling the medication transfer records from the referring hospital. Completes required regulatory documentation in accordance with MFB policies, in collaboration with the responsible physician. Pursuant to the Michigan Public Health Code Administrative Rules 338.2304/338.2406 writes controlled substance (Schedule II-V) via the following routes for administration: IM, SQ, and PO for in-patients if the admitting/designated physician has given proper authorization to do so.
- As directed by the MFBMG physicians, assists with daily patient rounding and assists with medical care within approved protocols. Writes medication orders within approved protocols or in collaboration with the responsible physician. Completes required regulatory documentation in accordance with MFB policies, in collaboration with the responsible physician.
- As directed by the MFBMG physicians, assists with discharge planning for patients, and completes discharge orders and writes prescriptions according to approved protocols and within the restrictions of the MFB privileges. Completes the discharge summary in collaboration with the attending physician.
- Ensures that services are provided in accordance with state and federal regulations, organizational policy, and accreditation compliance requirements.
- Performs individual assignments as management may direct. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the organization. Provides information to senior levels of management on the implication of policies and procedures being formulated and recommends specific actions.

- Master's Degree in area of clinical practice (PA or NP)
- Certified and licensed as a Physician's Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) by the State of Michigan
- Maintenance of CPR Certification
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant clinical experience
- Time management and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Able to respond to a highly variable workload including flexibility of work hours
- Able to maintain effective communication with multiple physicians and referral hospital employees.
- Excellent computer skills with specific ability to use Microsoft Office Products, Electronic Medical Record, other applications as necessary
- Reliable transportation and ability to access area Hospitals daily
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Significant rehabilitation and acute care experience as a Physician's Assistant
- Knowledge of Inpatient Hospital billing requirements
- Experience & Knowledge of Medicare Admission requirements
