Job Summary

The Recreation Supervisor of Outdoor Education is responsible for overseeing the stewardship, restoration, and maintenance of Hawthorn Glen's natural areas. This includes habitat management, trail maintenance, invasive species control, and coordinating conservation projects. Additionally, this role supervises the daily operations of the nature museum, ensuring proper exhibit maintenance and efficient staff coordination.

This individual will actively cultivate partnerships to enhance services, address the diverse needs of participants, and prioritize safety while continuously improving resources.

The salary range is $62,689 - $90,032.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in forestry, environmental studies/science, ecology, or related field. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • A minimum of one (1) years of experience in land or natural resource management, including developing and supervising staff and programs and conducting trainings.
  • Understanding of land conservation and stewardship is desired.
  • SAWW I, II and III Chainsaw certification, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • State of Wisconsin Pesticide/Herbicide Application Certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • WPFC Burn Boss Training and Experience, willingness to obtain certification when available.
  • Certified First Aid and CPR/AED or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date.
Responsibilities

  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates part-time outdoor education personnel. including land steward crew and animal care attendants.
  • Conducts training and in-services including:
    • Invasive species management
    • Hand tool safety, use and maintenance
    • Power tool safety, use and maintenance
    • Procedures for pesticide and herbicide use
  • Maintains accurate personnel and training records.
  • Develops and implements plans for: habitat management, invasive species control, trail maintenance, conservation control.
  • Oversee operations associated with the animal museum: exhibit maintenance, health monitoring, animal husbandry, staffing, record keeping.
  • Assist with outdoor education special events.
  • Orders, inventories and maintains sufficient supplies to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Creates and maintains tree and plant inventory.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of existing outdoor education resources and updates as needed to ensure they are current and meet community needs.
  • Sets long and short-range goals for outdoor education program as relates to land resources and the animal museum.
  • Conducts on-going safety checks of outdoor education facilities.
  • Coordinates with custodial and maintenance staff to ensure resources and equipment are clean, safe and in good repair
  • Establishes partnerships with other MPS departments, schools, governmental units, agencies, and community- based organizations.
  • Assists with Recreation Department activities as needed.
  • Serves on various community or employee committees as required and assigned.
  • Supports the Milwaukee Public Schools and Recreation Department Strategic Plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.
