The Chemistry Division is seeking a Scientist in Radiation Chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in defining and carrying out impactful science and is a nationally/internationally recognized leader in the field. Current science areas examined by EPIP include: the radiation chemistry of non-aqueous media; mechanistic investigation of charge transfer reactions including their kinetics and thermodynamics; and charge and exciton transport, separation and recombination in non-polar media.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, carry out, and publish independent, original and impactful science research utilizing LEAF's ultrafast capabilities (~ 10 ps resolution).
  • Present scientific results at domestic and international conferences.
  • Have significant impact on the scientific field, frequently leading to new principles, concepts, applications and opportunities.
  • In addition to their own research, they collaborate with other BNL and external scientists.
  • Consistently demonstrates very high levels ingenuity and creativity.
  • Research is recognized as important by sponsoring DOE program manager(s).
  • Develops new and original research directions.
  • Leads in writing proposals.
  • Driven by clear science needs, develops or acquires required experimental hardware to expand group capabilities.
  • Become an expert in independent operation and maintenance of the LEAF facility and train new users.
  • Contribute to maintaining group experimental facilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in physical chemistry or a related field and at least 6 years of relevant experience post-Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated ability as a principal investigator to lead research, balancing multiple projects and personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and contribute to successful proposals.
  • Nationally/internationally recognized with a strong track record of publications and presentations.
  • Extensive experience with transient spectroscopies and analysis.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in physical chemistry or a related field and at least 10 years of relevant experience post-Ph.D.
  • Experience in radiation chemistry, photochemistry and familiarity with electron transfer theory.
  • Ultrafast laser experience, particularly demonstrated experience with troubleshooting and
  • As required by science goals, can lead development and implementation or new and improved scientific capabilities that impact the future science directions of the Laboratory.
  • Proficient developing LabView applications to control experimental hardware, and the use of Igor Pro for data analysis.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $145,000 - $215,000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
