Assistant Scientist in Radiation Chemistry

The Chemistry Division is seeking a Assistant Scientist Research Staff member. This is a development position for professionals with advanced knowledge in a limited field of expertise and general grasp of related disciplines. The selected individual will be responsible for the independent conduct of scientific research or creative development work within an established framework. They will develop and operate highly specialized equipment or advanced methods. Work on unusually complex problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious. Contribute to the development of new principles and concepts. Guide the successful completion of programs and may function in a project leadership role. Exert significant influence on major organizational objectives. Interact with work group and collaborates with colleagues in other departments or at other institutions. May assist in preparing funding proposals.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Plan, carry out, and publish independent and impactful science research utilizing LEAF's ultrafast capabilities (~ 10 ps resolution).
  • Present scientific results at domestic and international conferences.
  • Expand scientific knowledge in the field of work and contribute to new scientific principles, concepts and theories.
  • Driven by science needs, develops or acquires required experimental hardware.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with existing group members.
  • Support external collaborators' work at LEAF.
  • Contribute to proposals.
  • Become an independent operator of the LEAF facility.
  • Contribute to maintaining group experimental facilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in physical chemistry or a related field and at least 2 years of relevant experience post-Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated ability to define their own research directions and contribute to collaborative projects.
  • Proven track record of publications.
  • Extensive experience with transient spectroscopies and analysis.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph. D in physical chemistry or a related field and 4+ years of post-PhD relevant experience.
  • Experience in radiation chemistry, photochemistry and familiarity with electron transfer theory.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to successful proposals.
  • Ultrafast laser experience, particularly demonstrated capabilities with troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Development of world-unique experimental capabilities.
  • Proficient developing LabView applications to control experimental hardware, and the use of Igor Pro for data analysis.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $103,600 - $140,000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
