Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Functions as the lead nurse in a clinical team in the provision of health care in a fast- paced college health center. Administrative responsibilities include providing supervision to the nursing team, including scheduling, training, and evaluation. The Lead Nurse is a member of the expanded leadership team. Clinical responsibilities include obtaining pertinent medical information during check-in; educating patients; providing care and treatment to patients consistent with nursing practice and theory; and administering vaccinations. The lead nurse must demonstrate the ability to accurately assess a patient's medical condition. The lead nurse must also serve as the infection control nurse for the clinic.
Additional responsibilities include scheduling the nurse's triage rotation, providing backup support to laboratory services, including the performance and processing of commonly ordered clinic tests. The lead nurse also performs key administrative tasks such as processing referrals in coordination with the medical records unit, assisting with prior authorizations for insurance, and supporting an assigned physician or mid-level provider through patient communication, care coordination, sharing normal lab results, and facilitating follow-up. The lead nurse may also draft forms for provider review and approval, including athletic physicals, emergency department, and communicable disease documentation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience

  • At least 3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school of professional nursing
  • Work experience as a nurse in a college health setting
  • Supervision experience
  • Experience and/or knowledge of NC Immunizations
  • Experience administering immunizations
  • Experience administering allergy shots
  • Experience performing basic laboratory and point of care tests
  • Experience scheduling multiple people including PRN staff

Required Certifications or licensure

  • Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina, by the N.C. Board of Nursing
  • Current CPR certification required by time of hire
