UIC is seeking a Network DevOps Engineer to join our Technology Solutions team. The The Network DevOps Engineer will lead a new effort to select and implement appropriate automation tools to streamline the management and governance of the network. This position jointly reports to the development and network teams to leverage the skills and tools of both teams. As tools are selected and implemented, the automation engineer will work with the rest of the network team to build a training plan so that automation skills are elevated for the entire team and automation becomes central to all network management. The position requires deep technical thinking, and hands-on technical skills to develop and deploy automation solutions.

The network is a mix of Cisco, Aruba and Palo Alto and includes ~2000 access switches, 6000 access points, and multiple firewalls across two campuses a short distance from each other.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Lead the selection and implementation of network automation tools. Collaborate with colleagues to identify manual processes and implement automatic solutions. Work daily in IDE of your choice to be implementing solutions using a variety of tools and languages such as Ansible, Terraform, Python. Strong understanding of API consumption._x000d_
  • Develop automated orchestration and event-based routines. Creating integrations among various systems using WebHooks and/or platform connectors. Design, develop, and implement solutions to integrate systems across the network to improve interoperation as well as to continuously verify systems configuration against baselines. Ability to think critically about problems, decipher stakeholder preferences versus hard requirements, and translate manual workflows into automation based on low-level designs._x000d_
  • Stay current with industry trends to learn new technologies and develop documentation and guides.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor Degree within Computer Science or closely related field of study
  2. Minimum 1 years of professional IT experience within Infrastructure & Networking Engineering which includes demonstrated experience in planning, building/implementation of communication Networks (LAN/WAN/VPN) that support high performance voice, data, video and wireless network services
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with network automation tools, such as Ansible
  • Experience with scripting languages, such as Python or Bash
  • Experience with relational database technologies
  • Familiarity with network administration and LAN architecture basics
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code, configuration management, consuming APIs and version control systems, such as GitHub
  • Experience with YAML, JSON and other configuration patterns for abstraction and containerization
  • Experience in automation using AI/ML technologies (configuration management, deployment automation, infrastructure orchestration, monitoring, and analytics).
  • Experience with developing infrastructure automation using tools
