Job Summary
This is a 12-month research position specifically focused on applied Weed Science research in row crops, forages, and non-crop/ROWs.

This is a one year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

Essential Functions
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Aid in a supporting role to the Extension Specialist conducting statewide IPM programs in various cropping systems:
The successful candidate will work with the Extension Specialist to conduct field level research that includes, but is not limited to planning and implementing project protocols, data collection and management, and overall supervision of seasonal field trials.

2. Assist with technical responsibilities of conducting applied research:
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing equipment, materials, and support for research operations. The candidate will be expected to make pesticide applications, evaluate pest/crop impacts, and carefully document these observations. Regular data entry and management will be required and therefore knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is expected. Routine day travel to research locations is expected. The candidate may supervise others, but this is not a major part of the job. Organizational skills are expected and highly valued in order to document and manage research data.

3. Assist with Extension outreach events:
The successful candidate will be expected to help plan and organize public events such as field days, scout schools, and crop tours at various farm locations and/or research and Extension centers.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Research Assistant:
Level I: Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Horticulture, Plant Science or a related field and no experience
Level II: Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Horticulture, Plant Science or a related field and 2 years of experience relevant to the position.

Research Associate:
Level I: Masters degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Horticulture, Plant Science or a related field and no experience.

Substitutions Allowed For Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities
Must have a general knowledge of agricultural systems and field research; working knowledge of moderately complex equipment, materials, and processes related to research operations; must demonstrate good written and oral communication skills.
Minimum Technology Skills
Knowledge/experience with basic computer processes, software, and applications (MS Word, Excel, etc.)
Minimum License and Certifications
A valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment is required.
