Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To perform seaman/deckhand and general maintenance duties as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform general maintenance to vessel and vessel equipment's.
2. Perform sanitary duties such as cleaning tug heads.
3. Perform seaman/deckhand duties such as handling mooring lines, tow wires, setting chafing blocks,
lifting and securing bridles, splicing lines, etc.
OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist Mate with preventive maintenance such as greasing deck machinery.
2. Test and operate deck machinery.
3. Assist Chief Engineer/Engineer in the engine room.
4. Perform duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works indoors and outdoors in various weather and sea conditions in wet, humid, noisy, and dusty areas.
Occasionally uses paints, solvents, and thinners.
Equipment use: Uses hand and hand-held power tools and general appliances. Operates winches and other
deck machinery.
Work hours: Normal work hours vary according to vessel assignment and sailing schedule. Normal work
days are Monday-Sunday.

equipment(s).

4. Other: Receives and follows instructions of supervisory personnel. Communicates with coworkers
and supervisory personnel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Sitting: Sits when splicing lines.
2. Climbing/Stepping/Balancing: Climbs/Steps from pier to vessel, vessel to barge, and vice versa.
Balances while on vessel in various weather and sea conditions.
3. Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling/Squatting: Stoops/Kneels/Crouches/Crawls to pick up and
place lines and towing gear and when performing general maintenance.
4. Twisting/Standing/Walking: Twists/Stands/Walks when handling lines and performing general
maintenance.
5. Reaching: Reaches when handling lines.
6. Throwing (overhead, low level): Throws lines.
7. Handling: Handles lines.
8. Fingering: Fingers when splicing lines and cleaning parts.
9. Eye-Hand-Foot coordination: Coordinates movements when performing deckhand duties and
general maintenance.
10. Vision (corrected, depth, wide field, color): 20/40 correctable vision in each eye and color sense
required by US Coast Guard. Depth perception and wide field of vision required to ensure safety of
crew, vessel(s), cargo, and equipment.
11. Pushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying (up to 50 pounds): Pushes/Pulls/Lifts/Carries lines, tools, and
equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS (licenses, degrees, certificates):
US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document with Able Bodied Seaman Special, Limited or Unlimited
endorsement required; STCW 95 endorsement, preferred.
Skills/Knowledge: Ability to operate and utilize basic hand and hand-held power tools.
Education/Training: High School or GED equivalent is required. Shall have sufficient verbal, reading, and
writing skills as necessitated by the job (i.e., coordinating tasks with coworkers, receiving instructions from
supervisory personnel, reading instructions/directions, writing statements/reports).
Experience: Minimum of one (1) year seagoing experience required, tugboat towing preferred.
