Director, Enterprise Data Management & Business Intelligence

Summary:

The Director of Enterprise Data Management and Business Intelligence (BI) will help lead the development and execution of an enterprise data strategy that ensures data quality, accessibility, security, and strategic value. This role blends technical expertise with cross-functional leadership, advancing analytics capabilities that empower data-driven decision-making across the ASPCA.

As a key member of the Product, Data, and Reporting leadership team, the Director will serve as a critical bridge between program teams and IT, promoting a data-first culture. The ideal candidate will be a relationship-builder and systems thinker, with a deep understanding of data governance, BI tools, and emerging technologies that drive actionable insights and operational excellence-all while supporting the mission to end cruelty to animals. This position includes building a high-performing team and continuously evolving our capabilities to meet future business demands

In this position, you will never be bored! The ASPCA supports a broad portfolio of technologies to support a highly mobile and diverse staff. Maintaining a presence in multiple geographic locations, the team provides support (hands-on and remote) to over a dozen facilities and field operations, and over a thousand individual staff members. Your work will be integral to the ASPCA as you work across departments and ASPCAs to ensure ASPCA staff, partners and communities have the systems needed to work effectively and efficiently to improve animal welfare.

This remote-based position (which requires travel, as described below) is open to all eligible candidates based within the United States. Please note, a cover letter is required to complete your application as a part of this process.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Team Leadership (30%)

  • Build and scale a high-performing team of data professionals, including data analysts, BI developers, and data governance specialists; imbue team with a good understanding of the ASPCA's mission, teams, and priorities

  • Define team structure, roles, and hiring plans aligned with the evolving data roadmap

  • Foster a collaborative data culture focused on ownership, innovation, and excellence

  • Identify and implement targeted training plans to equip the team with the skills needed to effectively use the data tech stack aligned with their roles and responsibilities

  • Align team objectives with organizational priorities and adjust focus as needed for maximum impact

  • Be responsible for the team's day-to-day activities to ensure project plans and delivery commitments are met

  • Maintain, evaluate, and improve team performance metrics

  • Work with team members to identify professional areas for growth and provide mentoring, coaching, training and cross-training opportunities

  • Perform people management tasks, such as check-ins, goal setting, approving schedule requests, interviewing candidates for open positions, etc.

Enterprise Data Governance Implementation and Operations (20%)

  • Develop and implement an ASPCA-wide data governance framework and steering council accountable for decision making on ASPCA data policies and standards

  • Collaborate with leadership to identify data stewards and owners, define roles and responsibilities, determine training needs and ongoing communication

  • Manage and implement enterprise data governance rules, processes, workflows, documentation, and tools that drive data availability, improve data accuracy and reliability, reduce risk and foster better decision making

  • Champion data literacy and stewardship across the organization

  • Translate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders to foster adoption and understanding

Business Intelligence Execution (20%)

  • Oversee and manage the design, development, and delivery of BI solutions as part of the data strategy roadmap and ongoing operational requests to provide actionable insights to stakeholders

  • Partner with business units to understand reporting and analytics needs and translate them into technical solutions

  • In collaboration with Director, Data Engineering Operations and others, advance BI infrastructure, centralized reporting frameworks, and analytics maturity using new and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions

  • In partnership with Director, Data Engineering Operations, manage enterprise BI tools and platforms, ensuring scalability and performance

  • Drive self-service BI capabilities and democratize access to trusted data and lead efforts to make commonly required data sets readily available

Strategic Alignment and Process Optimization (30%)

  • Co-lead and execute a comprehensive data strategy and roadmap with Director, Data Engineering Operations to ensure alignment in priorities, data architecture, tooling, and cross-training

  • Collaborate with leadership to sustain a unified enterprise data strategy and data-driven culture

  • Identify and collaborate with Director, Data Engineering Operations and others to implement process improvements to workflows and automate tasks to enhance efficiency to streamline delivery and quality of data

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and trends to ensure the data ecosystem evolves with business needs

  • Help to drive data transformation through innovative and highly strategic decisions and investments in data management and business intelligence

  • Evaluate and prioritize product-aligned data initiatives, balancing innovation with business needs

  • Lead vendor management and external partnerships for project delivery and support services, as needed

Technical Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of software development life-cycle methodologies, SaaS, and IT best practices

  • Proven track record of implementing data governance frameworks and managing enterprise BI solutions

  • Strong understanding of data management principles and technologies

  • Understanding of relational databases, data architecture, data warehousing

  • Proven ability to scale teams, lead through ambiguity, and build long-term technical strategies

  • Basic understanding of SQL and other programming languages (like Python or Java) a plus

Additional Information

  • Must be available for off-hours support of critical applications

  • Some travel to ASPCA locations and training sites (about 5% annually) may be required

Education and Work Experience:

  • High School Diploma (Required)

  • 5 years' experience as a people manager of a data team (e.g. analysts, Business Intelligence specialists, governance specialists, etc.) required

  • Hands-on experience using Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Domo, SSRS) required

  • Experience with master data management and implementing and using Master Data Management (MDM) solutions required

  • Experience leading, advocating, and successfully implementing a data strategy from the ground-up strongly preferred

  • Experience implementing an enterprise-wide data governance framework required, experience implementing one across a complex, cross-functional organization strongly preferred

  • Experience applying data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning solutions strongly preferred

  • Experience working with internal stakeholders to prioritize and deliver on a business intelligence roadmap strongly preferred

  • Experience working at a non-profit organization preferred

Compensation & Benefits:

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.
