Job Description

Position Summary:

The Senior Epic Data Courier and Release Manager leads and optimizes the Epic environment management and release processes. This senior-level role is responsible for overseeing the full lifecycle of Epic build migration across environments and for managing complex, multi-team release initiatives. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise with Epic Data Courier, strong leadership capabilities, and a strategic mindset for advancing change control and release management maturity within a large healthcare IT ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical and strategic lead for all Epic Data Courier activities, ensuring accurate and timely build migrations across development, testing, training, and production environments.
  • Own and enhance the Epic release management framework, including planning, communication, risk assessment, and execution of system updates (SUs), upgrades, and quarterly releases.
  • Establish and enforce standards for migration tracking, auditability, version control, and build documentation across all Epic modules and teams.
  • Partner with Epic application analysts, IT leadership, and operational stakeholders to align release cycles with clinical and business priorities.
  • Proactively identify cross-application dependencies and mitigate risks associated with large-scale changes or upgrade events.
  • Lead change advisory board (CAB) discussions related to Epic build changes and migrations, providing clear insights on risks and rollback options.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for Epic environment management, guiding junior team members and providing training on courier best practices.
  • Monitor Epic's release notes, regulatory changes, and new features to help the organization stay current and strategically adopt enhancements.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives related to Epic change management and release governance.
  • Coordinate planned downtimes, including stakeholder communication, clinical impact mitigation, testing support, and downtime/recovery procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Informatics, Information Technology, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on Epic experience, including 3+ years managing Data Courier processes in a multi-environment Epic landscape.
  • Active Epic certification in Data Courier or another core Epic module (e.g., EpicCare, Ambulatory, Resolute, etc.).
  • Proven experience leading Epic upgrades or version transitions within a healthcare organization.
  • Deep understanding of change management methodologies, ITIL, and healthcare compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate across multiple teams, manage complex dependencies, and lead meetings with technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working within an academic medical center, IDN, or large health system.
  • Familiarity with Clarity, Caboodle, or Epic reporting structures as they relate to build dependencies.
  • Experience with automation tools for build migration, release tracking, or CI/CD in Epic environments.
