Purpose

The Senior Cloud Engineer serves as the technical lead for cloud architecture and automation initiatives across the healthcare system. This role designs and implements scalable, secure, and automated Azure-based environments that support both clinical and enterprise workloads. The Senior Cloud Engineer builds and maintains cloud-native and hybrid infrastructure using Azure and Terraform, ensuring strict compliance with healthcare security and regulatory standards. This role collaborates across teams enable infrastructure modernization, Epic and third-party application hosting, and hospital operations readiness.

Responsibilities

Cloud Architecture & Engineering

  • Leads the design, deployment, and optimization of Azure cloud environments, including compute, storage, networking, identity, and backup services.

  • Architects hybrid connectivity across Azure and on-prem environments using VPN, ExpressRoute, and virtual WAN technologies.

  • Implements governance, cost management, and resource consistency across subscriptions using Azure Policies, Blueprints, and Management Groups.

  • Designs scalable virtual infrastructure for Epic application integration, third-party healthcare systems, and enterprise services.

  • Develops BCDR strategies leveraging Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery, and Zerto for cloud-based resiliency.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) & Automation

  • Builds and manages Azure environments using Terraform for IaC and GitOps methodologies.

  • Develops modular, reusable Terraform templates and pipelines (CI/CD) for rapid environment provisioning and configuration.

  • Automates routine operational tasks using PowerShell, Bash, or Python in combination with Azure. Automation or Logic Apps.

  • Integrates cloud infrastructure into ServiceNow for provisioning workflows and change control.

Security, Compliance & Monitoring

  • Collaborates with Security and IAM teams to implement least privilege, Zero Trust, and conditional access frameworks in Azure.

  • Manages identity using Azure AD, Managed Identities, and RBAC for secure access to cloud resources.

  • Ensures HIPAA compliance through logging, encryption, data classification, and secure connectivity.

  • Deploys and maintains cloud-native monitoring tools (i.e. Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Defender for Cloud) to ensure observability and SLA compliance.

Collaboration & Project Delivery

  • Leads technical efforts for cloud readiness assessments, new system integrations, and vendor cloud deployments.

  • Partners with network, storage, Epic, and endpoint teams to enable secure, high-performance cloud-to-ground connectivity.

  • Documents designs, runbooks, and knowledge articles to support operational readiness and knowledge transfer.

  • Mentors junior staff and contributes to an environment of innovation, reliability, and service excellence.

Marginal or Periodic Functions:

  • Researches emerging cloud technologies and recommends adoption strategies.

  • Participates in on-call rotations and incident response for cloud services.

  • Conducts internal training sessions and knowledge-sharing workshops.

  • Supports audits and compliance reviews related to cloud infrastructure.

  • Assists with vendor evaluations and contract negotiations for cloud services.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.

  • Five or more years of experience in infrastructure or cloud engineering roles with at 3 years focused on Azure.

  • Expert-level knowledge of Azure compute, networking, storage, and identity services.

  • Demonstrated experience building and managing environments using Terraform and Azure DevOps/GitHub Actions.

  • Strong scripting skills (PowerShell, Bash, or Python).

  • Proven ability to design and document enterprise-scale cloud architectures in regulated environments.

  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting hybrid Epic environments or other healthcare clinical applications in Azure.

  • Knowledge of cloud hosting and architecture for third-party healthcare systems (Imprivata, PACS, imaging, etc.).

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Sentinel, and Azure Policy for governance and security.

  • Experience with ServiceNow integration for cloud infrastructure provisioning or incident/change workflows.

  • Understanding of ITIL processes and frameworks for operational support and change management.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS

Preferred:

  • Azure certifications (AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-400, or equivalent)

Salary Range

$105,000 + depending on qualifications
