Position Description:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) works as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services for patients in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's Community Access Division. This role offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care in both inpatient and outpatient settings while collaborating closely with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifying normal and abnormal findings.

  • Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests.

  • Develop and implement treatment plans, both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical.

  • Educate patients and families regarding disease management, treatment options, and preventive health.

  • Perform clinical procedures within scope of training and credentialing.

  • Document care accurately in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

  • Collaborate with supervising physician(s), consulting providers, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize care.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, program development, and ongoing education.

  • Provide continuity of care, ensuring smooth communication across settings.

  • Meet regulatory and compliance requirements including privileging, CMS, and Joint Commission standards.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with orthopaedic care teams to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions in a blended clinical environment.

  • Write timely admission, transfer, procedure, and progress notes.

  • Perform and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures, communicating results clearly to patients and teams.

  • Participate in department initiatives to improve efficiency, safety, and quality outcomes.

  • Stay current on clinical best practices, trends, and evidence-based guidelines in orthopaedic care.

Work Schedule
  • Flexible scheduling required to provide patient care coverage.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Active physical exertion including continuous standing and walking.

  • Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens and hazardous materials (appropriate PPE provided).

  • Must meet sensory requirements including effective communication and ability to distinguish clinical details.

Position Requirements:

Education

  • Nurse Practitioner: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing

  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Licensure & Certifications (must be current and maintained):

  • Nurse Practitioner:

    • Wisconsin RN license

    • Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License (APNP)

    • Certification as an NP (Adult Care NP or Acute Care NP preferred; Family or Geriatric NP considered)

    • AHA BCLS

    • CITI Certification (within 90 days of hire)

  • Physician Assistant:

    • Wisconsin PA license

    • NCCPA Certification

    • AHA BCLS

    • CITI Certification (within 90 days of hire)

Experience

  • No prior APP experience required; new graduates are encouraged to apply.

  • Orthopaedic or surgical experience preferred.
