Carnegie Mellon University's department of Athletics is searching for an Assistant Coach in its intercollegiate softball program. This is an exciting 12-month opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. The successful candidate's primary responsibility will be the oversight of a portion of the defense or pitching staff depending on applicable skillset. This role involves providing direct instruction, analyzing videos, and implementing data-driven player development, all while working collaboratively with the Head Coach and coaching staff. The Assistant Coach is also responsible for ensuring the safety, academic accountability, and holistic well-being of student-athletes under their care. Additionally the candidate will assist the Head Softball Coach with recruiting, monitoring academic performance, community involvement, fundraising, camps, practice and game coaching.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Coaching: Direct oversight and development of a portion of the defense. Prepare, plan, conduct and evaluate practice sessions in collaboration with the head coach. Candidate must be flexible in teaching methods and communication styles to connect with players while teaching player-to- player sport and position specific skills, during and after practice during the traditional and non-traditional seasons. Additionally, candidate must have an overall understanding of the game to assist in teaching progressions and drills during daily practice.

  • Recruitment: Assist in the recruitment of student athletes. Attend off campus games for the purpose of evaluation and contact. Coordinate mailing of recruitment materials and recruiting information. Maintain contact with prospective student-athletes. Plan campus visits with prospective student-athletes and their parents.

  • Team Administration: Provide oversight in support of the department travel agent with travel arrangements for the team including travel itineraries and team meals. Assist the Head Coach with maintaining equipment and gear inventory and distribution to athletes.

  • Academics: Direct oversight of monitoring academic performance and academic progress of student-athletes and intervene when necessary.

  • Campus/Community Engagement: Teach a PE Class on campus. Maintain frequent and consistent public contact with high schools and clubs for recruitment, scouting and public relations efforts.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred

  • 1-3 years of collegiate coaching experience required

  • Previous collegiate experience as a player preferred

  • Softball specific video and data analytics experience preferred

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

  • Child Protection Clearances (Act 153)

  • Motor Vehicle Records (MVR)
