Essential Job Duties
The Field and Crop Production Technician plays a vital role in advancing sustainable agriculture and hands-on student learning. This position splits its time between managing crop production at the Fike Agronomy Field Lab (50%) and supporting operations at the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Unit ( SASU) and Agroecology Education Farm (50%). This hands-on position blends fieldwork with mentorship, offering opportunities to lead student workshops, maintain agricultural infrastructure, and collaborate with faculty to enhance classroom instruction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage crop production and long-term demonstration plots at the Fike Agronomy Field Lab.
  • Support operations at SASU and the Agroecology Education Farm, including infrastructure upkeep, grounds maintenance, and equipment management.
  • Train and mentor student interns in sustainable farming practices.
  • Collaborate with faculty by maintaining demonstration plots that enhance classroom teaching.
  • Deliver hands-on learning through workshops and practicums (e.g., calibrating seed drills, measuring plant health, assessing seeding depth).

This role involves outdoor physical activity and the operation of agricultural equipment. You'll thrive in this role if you enjoy working outdoors, solving practical challenges, and sharing your knowledge with others. You'll collaborate closely with faculty and students, adapt to changing seasonal needs, and communicate effectively across teams.
