About the Job
This role participates in planned research projects by performing research protocols with minimal direction and guidance from the principal investigator, program director or senior scientists. May exercise moderate discretion and judgment in the execution and interpretation of experiments, and of data derived.

Basic purpose or primary function of the job The Raymond G. Perelman Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics (CCMT) is dedicated to the understanding, development, and application of gene and related cell and nucleic acid therapies and the promotion of professional and public education in the field. The CCMT fosters a multidisciplinary approach among researchers and scientists working to discover new gene and cell therapies in search of cures for debilitating and life-threatening disorders. To support rapid translation from bench to bedside, the CCMT has the resources to manufacture a wide range of viral and non-viral vectors to transfer genes of interest and has the capability of separating and manipulating human cells for gene transfer.

The Research Viral Vector Core (RVC), an integral part of the CCMT, provides state-of-the-art technology support for investigators interested in using viral-based vectors for gene transfer in basic research and preclinical studies. Vectors are made available to researchers in the United States and abroad.

The Research Technician plays a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the RVC to assure the highest achievable quality and consistency of products, compliance with cGLP standards and adherence to all standards established in the RVC. The RT performs laboratory based testing procedures (SDS-PAGE / Silver stain, Q-PCR, ELISA, Western blot, etc), and all aspects of test performance including pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of testing. In addition, he/she will join the senior scientists for assay development and vector design and cloning. This position requires specialized education in the biological or chemical sciences and is required to consistently exercise discretion and judgment in execution, interpretation of experiments, and of data derived.

What you will do

  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples with minimal supervision
  • Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes/ reports the data
  • Performs tasks that require knowledge of advanced techniques and lab equipment
  • Performs advanced calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures
  • Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas
  • May be required to modify scientific methods and protocols (in conjunction with PI)
  • Checks others' results for completeness and accuracy
  • May be responsible for training and mentoring new staff
  • May assist in the preparation of grants journal articles, posters and oral presentations
  • May perform routine and non-routine tests / experiments as needed
  • Maintains office, lab area, reagents, supplies and equipment
  • Performs routine maintenance on lab equipment
  • Coordinates schedules of tests & procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
  • Conducts literary searches as required

Education

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience

  • At least two (2) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Required
  • At least three (3) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Preferred
