Since opening in 2001 as 4OC Kids, the division of developmental-behavioral pediatrics at UCI, Department of Pediatrics, has been a leader in medical assessment, diagnosis, care coordination, family support and education for children with autism and other developmental disorders focusing on children from birth through age 5 years. In 2012, through a collaborative effort of UC Irvine, CHOC Children's and Chapman University, The Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CAND) was founded to expand the scope of care to include a multidisciplinary team of specialist offering evaluation and treatment of patients ranging from birth to age 22 years. Our faculty work close with our UCI fellowship program in child and adolescent psychiatry, the UCI residency program in family medicine, and the CHOC-UCI general pediatrics residency program to train the next generation of health providers in the often-complex care of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. The Center for Autism & Neurodevelopmental Disorders also has a longstanding close tie to families and the community to provide resources, empowerment, and address disparities in health care for underserved populations.
