The Animal Resources Center at The University of Texas at Austin covers approx. 150,000 sq. ft. of research animal space. The Animal Resources Center is responsible for managing three centralized animal facilities as well as some of the smaller satellite locations.

Purpose

The Animal Resources Technologist I will provideveterinarytechnical support for research, clinical, anesthesia, and surgical procedures critical for the care and use of research animals.

Responsibilities
  • Responds to health concerns and performs health assessment and observation for signs of disease or illness in rodents as well as a wide range of other species.

  • Maintains medical records documentation and other records for theveterinary group.

  • Administers treatments and medications under the supervision of theveterinarian.

  • Provides hands-on training for research staff under the supervision of theveterinarian.

  • Provides anesthesia and surgical support for researchers andveterinary staff.

  • Cleans and maintains surgical suites and clinical supplies. Sterilizes instruments and prepares surgical packs.

  • Collects, prepares, and submits diagnostic samples for disease surveillance and quarantine.

Required Qualifications
  • High School graduation or GED.

  • Ability to maintain detailed medical records and communicate effectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and the ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Current LAT certification or LAT certification obtained within one year from the start date through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science OR registered Veterinarian Technician (RTV) license.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in a laboratory animal facility or veterinarian clinic.

  • Experience in animal anesthesia.

  • Experience as aVeterinarianTechnician or HealthTechnologist.

  • Experience with lab animals; handling, dosing, and anesthesia.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$46,000
