Overview
The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Courier Clerk for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the Supervisor, picks up and delivers interoffice, incoming and outgoing mail, parcels and packages. Serves as liaison between the mail units of Rutgers. Using Rutgers vehicles, transports mail, packages and passengers as assigned. Calculates postage costs. Performs related clerical duties.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Picks up and delivers mail to various United States Post Offices.
  • Serves as liaison between university departments and Mail Services.
  • Accepts and signs for accountable mail (Certified Mail, Express Mail, Insured Mail, etc) from the USPS.
  • Uses departmental equipment necessary in to complete daily job tasks.
  • Detects faulty operation of equipment and performs minor repairs.
  • Sorts mail, parcels, freight, and campus mail.
  • Delivers mail and parcels from all vendors to various assigned routes throughout the campus.
  • Separates parcels from third party vendors addressed to students and staff.
  • Resolves mail related problems when possible.
  • Occasionally makes early morning and late evening mail pickups as required.
  • May operate postage machines and assist in processing outbound mail.
  • Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers' regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education required plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a customer service-based environment preferably one that provided goods and/or services to customers.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Valid NJ driver's license with two years driving experience.
  • Ability to drive University vehicles, and the successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and have effective client service skills.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must possess the ability to use various department equipment such as PC's, printers, handheld and desktop scanners, postage machines, etc.
  • May be required to work staggered hours.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift and move seventy (70) pounds.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Work is primarily conducted in mailrooms, office buildings, and campus facilities, with regular travel between locations. The employee will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environments, including varying weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold) during deliveries and pickups.
