We have an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Researcher, at UL Research Institutes, based in Arizona. Ability to travel to Pinal County.

The Post-doctoral researcher performs independent research in preparation for a career as a scientific professional, contributing to and advancing the study of safety STEM education of the Institute for Research Experiences & Education (IREE). The post-doctoral researcher will assist in initiating the design, development, execution, and implementation of research projects about the ways that communities understand risks and aspire to safety, and community members' lived experiences surrounding safety and preparedness. The post-doctoral researcher will contribute to research and protocol design, build connections with community members, facilitate meetings and data collection activities, conduct analysis, and contribute to the preparation of educational materials, federal reporting, and peer-review journal articles.

This one-year Post-doctoral researcher position is focused on advancements in community-led disaster preparedness in rural areas.

We translate the findings of our research institutes into compelling educational materials, bringing to life scientific concepts using contemporary best education practices to create learning opportunities for a wide variety of secondary through postgraduate students. Our academic collaborations and support for the next generation of safety scientists likewise reach across the educational spectrum, including partnerships that reach out to students who are underrepresented in STEM fields.

Through all of our programs, we aim to unlock the diverse perspectives that are essential for solving the world's most pressing safety and sustainability issues.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Post-Doctoral Researcher you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Builds collaborative relationships with community members, serving as a key liaison between the project team and community participants.

  • Conducts primary research in collaboration with a diverse group of: community members (particularly those with interest or expertise in local disaster risks), experts from informal learning centers, education researchers, and educators.

  • Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad research concepts, guiding the analysis of unique problems, and developing new and improved techniques and methods.

  • Assume primary responsibility for implementing primary components of a research project.

  • Assist with research design, data collection, analysis, reporting, , and support researchers on additional projects.

  • Design, implement, and document validation processes, including member checking.

  • Perform research to a high standard and in accordance with all institutional and federal regulations.

  • Collaborate with ULRI colleagues and universities.

  • Contribute to and participate in community presentations, webinars, conference presentations, writing papers for journal publications, and training programs.

  • Participate as an engaged, committed mentee with a team of mentors led by IREE's Executive Director and Vice President.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Ph.D. in education research or other social sciences, conferred within three years of application or completion of Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

  • Experience working with marginalized communities, rural communities, and / or informal learning settings required.

  • Ability to travel regularly to rural communities in Pinal County.
