Essential Job Duties
An Outdoor Adventures Assistant Trip Leader is a passionate and safety-minded student who helps inspire others to get involved in outdoor recreation. In this entry-level role, you'll assist in leading half-day, full-day, and weekend trips, workshops, and clinics to prepare for advancement as a trip leader. You will help with trip planning, equipment preparation, and group management while building valuable skills in leadership, risk management, and instruction. Join our team and help us guide new adventurers into the outdoors!
Contribute


  • Trip and Workshop Leadership: Assist trip leaders with all aspects of a trip, including group development, risk management, and instruction of technical skills. You will also help plan, create lessons, and facilitate educational workshops and clinics.
  • Program Education and Marketing: Help market trips to the campus community and educate others about all Outdoor Adventures programs, including trips, clinics, and equipment rentals.

  • Logistics and Equipment: Prepare equipment for trips and maintain gear by checking it in and out, cleaning, disinfecting, and performing minor repairs.

Work Schedule Maximum 20 hours per week as scheduled
Other Work/Responsibilities


  • Guideline Enforcement: Understand and enforce Wellness and Recreation and area specific guidelines.

  • Risk Management: Knowledge and implementation of emergency action plan.

  • Training and Meetings: Attend required training and monthly staff meetings.

  • Community: Develop professional relationships with co-workers, participants and guests.

  • Support: Perform other related duties to support the overall functioning of the department.


Working Conditions


  • Environment: Both indoors and outdoors with potential exposure to adverse weather.

  • Physical: Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting weight up to 40 lbs regularly.

  • Sensory: Potentially loud and busy work environment that requires strong communication and observation skills.

  • Schedule: Flexibility in your availability is needed to potentially work early mornings, late nights, weekends, and breaks.

  • Safety: Exposure to potential safety hazards and adherence to the emergency action plan to mitigate risk.



  • Time Commitment: this position requires you to work a minimum of two outdoor trips per semester.

  • Schedule Requirements: This role requires consistent availability on Fridays and weekends.

Required License or Certification


  • Eligibility: Current full-time NC State student.

  • Certifications: First Aid and Adult CPR/AED certifications should be current or obtained before position commencement. This certification is provided to selected candidates upon being hired.

  • Preferred Experience: Demonstrated experience with adventure programming, such as participating in or assisting with outdoor trips, challenge courses, and related leadership trainings.
