Essential Job Duties |
This full-time 12-month professional academic advisor position involves the proactive advising of students (primarily first-year freshmen) in the Life Sciences First Year Program (
LSFY). This position will be expected to become fully familiar with the requirements of the curricula within the life sciences at NC State, including but not limited to Biochemistry, Nutrition Science, and Plant Biology within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as Biological Sciences, Genetics, Microbiology, and Zoology within the College of Sciences.
Additionally, this position will advise assigned students about the requirements for those curricula and monitor advisees' progress toward fulfillment of the requirements for declaring a major and for attaining the baccalaureate degree (typical caseload of ~150 students). The position will also be expected to teach multiple course sections (primarily
LSC 103: Exploring Opportunities in the Life Sciences) to first-year students, focusing on issues related to their transition to college and exploration of life science and related majors (primarily during the fall semester). The position will report to the
LSFY Director, Dr. Erica Kosal. |
Other Responsibilities |
The position will work closely with a team of advisors under the guidance of the Director of Life Sciences First Year Program (
LSFY) to plan and participate in New Student Orientation, NC State's Open House, Experience NC State, and other activities intended to make students more familiar with the curricula in life sciences at NC State. There may be additional duties assigned to help with the programming and event needs of
LSFY. |
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Master's degree in a life science or education field or
- Bachelor's degree in a life science or education field and 3 or more years of relevant experience

Other Required Qualifications |
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and ethics of undergraduate advising
- Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills
- Strong communication ability in both written and oral format
- Ability to work with a varied student population
- Working successfully with a team
- Positive relationship building
- Project management skills
- Program development

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree in higher education, biology or life science discipline or academic counseling (or related field)
- Experience in an advising role at the collegiate level (including with freshmen)
- Evidence of working with science or similar majors is desirable, as is a degree in a life science discipline.
- Experience in working with students in transition and students in academic difficulty
- Experience with teaching or giving presentations
