Department Summary

The UNTHSC Utilities & Energy Management department, which is a division of Facilities Management, is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of essential building systems and infrastructure across the campus

Position Overview

The UNT HSC Building Utilities Mechanic position involves performing routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on the campus's essential mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing systems. The role is crucial for ensuring a safe, energy-efficient, and comfortable environment for learning, research, and general operations

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Experience with HVAC central plant systems, equipment safety devices, basic electrical knowledge, and repair, starting up, and commissioning HVAC systems.
  • Hands on experience with setting up and troubleshooting mechanical equipment is required, including pumps, motors, fans, chillers, boilers, air compressors and testing safety devices.
  • Typical repairs include large central plant systems with condensing boilers, large pump stations, chillers and refrigerant monitoring systems, office fit out with VAV boxes, air handler retrofits, roof top unit replacement, fan coil units and heat pumps.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.


Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:



  • Electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience in the operation and repair of boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps and life safety systems.
  • Good computer skills with experience controlling Building Automation Systems.
  • Ability to work any shift.


Job Duties



  • Operate and maintains the Utility Plant equipment Systems e.g chill water systems, air compressors, boilers Associated waste systems, water towers, piping infrastructure, water treatment systems and laboratory supply, and exhaust systems.
  • Performs periodical maintenance (PM) on plant air compressors, boilers, chillers and associated system components, as outlined in the preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Utilize automated building controls system to monitor, maintain, and operate all chillers and heating plant equipment and systems as required, reporting all equipment and system deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Assist in the installation of new building mechanical system improvements, and ensure they are installed to ASHRAE, NEC, and NFPA standards.
  • Work with other maintenance employees and conduct training of new employees in job duties if directed. Assists in coordinating the efficient use of allocated labor and supplies for daytoday requirements.
  • Identify improvement projects that increase reliability of existing systems. Coordinate the activities of onsite contractors performing work or installing new mechanical systems.
  • Responsible for keeping maintenance records up to date including work orders and related forms.

  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
