Essential Job Duties |
Wellness and Recreation is seeking enthusiastic students to provide a safe climbing experience at the indoor climbing wall.
Wellness and Recreation commits to foster a learning environment for our student employees that cultivate the skills of ethical reasoning, critical thinking, teamwork, initiative and professionalism. Programs and facilities are student run with professional coaching. The goal is to help develop student's transferable skills and create a supportive and challenging environment for them to succeed in and out of the classroom.
Responsibilities
* Educate NC State students, faculty, staff and community about outdoor recreation, including outdoor activities, destinations, equipment, and Outdoor Adventures programs (including trips, climbing wall, challenge course, and equipment rentals)
* Instruct climbing basics classes which include: teaching belay and climbing techniques, following lesson plans, prepping equipment, and facilitating experiential activities
* Conduct safety skill verifications
* Educate participants on equipment, technical skills and risk management
* Observe and check for proper belay techniques, safe climbing practices and proper equipment usage |

You'll also be proficient in our Emergency Action Plan to respond effectively in critical situations. Professional Development and Teamwork: Attend all required training sessions and meetings to continually enhance your skills and knowledge. Cultivate positive professional relationships with your colleagues, participants, and guests, contributing to a supportive team atmosphere. Exceeding Service Expectations: Consistently uphold and exceed the core values of Wellness and Recreation, demonstrating strong ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and a collaborative teamwork approach. You'll take initiative to enhance operations and consistently embody professionalism in all interactions. Departmental Support: Provide essential assistance in various departmental functions as needed, ensuring the smooth and successful operation of all Wellness and Recreation programs and services. Behavior Management NS Conflict Resolution: Effectively manage participant and patron behaviors, and skillfully mediate conflicts to ensure a positive and safe environment for everyone. Program Support: Actively assist with the design, implementation, and evaluation of various programs. Operational Assistance: Provide support for program registration and equipment rentals, covering operations at the climbing wall/center and the main equipment rentals facility as needed. Flexible Schedule: The position requires evening and weekend work to support program operations and facility hours.

Required License or Certification |
- Student: Full-time NC State student status, demonstrated by enrollment in at least 12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credit hours.
- Ensuring Safety: Holds current CPR, AED and First Aid certifications, or is prepared to obtain them within 30 days, to ensure a safe environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with rock climbing and associated equipment, in both natural (outdoor) and artificial (indoor) environments.
